Tesla gets in trouble for using HAL 9000 for Sentry Mode, switching to Portal turret - Electrek
So HAL 9000 is off limits and the same may happen with the representation of a portal turret.
What's wrong with using an image of Starman's Spacex helmet reflecting scrolling computer code in its visor?
If you just want to save lives, then the law is great.
If you need to find a balance between saving lives and livelihoods then the law is the wrong instrument to use.
Xenophobia has always been the most infectious of illnesses.
Politicians of all nations are quick to spread it and populations are quick to catch it; the usual divide and conquer.
Trump did say way-back-when that we would be "sick of winning" and it is sickening to realize what we allow...
Tesla Autopilot safety feature helps save cop running a red light - Electrek
Would side-pointing radar help? Similar problem to another driver running a light. Except on either side. And sudden braking could cause problems for following vehicles.
You're right. It will be a long time before legislators are comfortable with any form of remote summoning.
They will be too worried that the car will go full Mjolnir.
No you're not. This is better than dope/beer/daytime tv/scratching yourself. You love it here.
In trying to find a balance between lives and livelihoods the law is a clumsy instrument. Negotiations would be a much better route but that would involve not treating people as statistics, which...
This research stuff is fun, isn't it?
Maybe People Don't Listen to You Because of Your Self-Righteousness
Blader you make some excellent points, but please get off your throne.
Wide adoption of their technology into different transport sectors. Self driving taxis and private vehicles but mostly self driving lorries and big-rigs.
Delivery drones don't have to be annoying quadcopters.
It's why so many partnerships are popping up. Like Toyota / Maxar / Carmera. Or those...
I wonder if this will incite more vandalism against test vehicles and those belonging to early adopters. IIRC there was some reported a while back.
Here it is: Wielding Rocks and Knives, Arizonans Attack Self-Driving Cars
And for very good financial reasons all of the main players are involved in pushing the niche advantages of their own limited systems as virtual winners.
Yet as you rightly suggested, no one has crossed the finish line and cool demos aren't enough.
It like Spacex. No amount of Grasshoppers or...
Let me guess. Navigant Research/ Guidehouse/Veritas Capital ?
It's just their annual survey of the best autonomous vehicle press releases and videos. If Tesla wants a higher rating they should publish more. Their system would be no better, of course.
There is no way to cheat self-driving, but how you measure and present progress toward that goal is open to manipulation.
They have to report disengagements that involve accidents and there are others where the safety driver just took over. Are there others? Disengagements say nothing about...
And does anyone double check this?
Again, there is a lot of money riding on the success of these systems.
And don't say that a car maker wouldn't dream of manipulating safety data. It's happened before, it will happen again.
Now that I think about it 2.25 billion is a ridiculous amount of money.
Falcon 9 development was at most 400 million and Falcon Heavy was around 500 million.
What the hell is Waymo doing?
But you are taking the disengagement figure and assuming that it relates to driving around San Francisco. It might have been generated on city streets in the rush hour, or at 3am when it's quiet, or even on highways which are a much more forgiving environment.
For better or worse, self-driving...
Don't have a favorite team.
Everyone's self-driving system has some niche advantage but too many limitations / things they aren't showing us or telling us.
None are worth the money.
Ah yes disengagement reports.
If you choose your routes, traffic levels, weather conditions, average vehicle speed you can pass any test.
As we've all learned from the emissions scandal even third party testing can be undermined if the manufacturer knows in advance what the testers are looking...
The Tesla video that diplomat33 posted above doesn't tell us anything because we have no idea how much assistance the system had or didn't have to learn the route.
Then what about driving the same route in the rain or in the dark, or even just driving the same route in the opposite direction...
Nope, not at all. What is needed is an equality of scepticism.
We know that Tesla's AP claims do not measure up because people like diplomat33 own the cars and experience the problems for themselves.
But when companies like Cruise or Waymo post a few videos or press releases, suddenly everyone...
Toyota's self-driving car mapping system could be a game changer - Roadshow

Uber self-driving cars are back testing on San Francisco streets – TechCrunch
Two cars. Daylight only.
More overseas....
Uber's self-driving vehicles set to hit the road again
I know, right? Cruise does it and everyone believes that they are looking at a self-driving miracle.
I'm going to stick a camera on top of my POS ICE and post the footage as an FSD breakthrough.
Throw in some forward-looking press releases - job done.
My point is that Tesla haven't done it...
So we're back to comparing videos and press releases.
Which was the basis of last year's Navigant Research / Guidehouse / Veritas Capital report into automated driving.
Tesla doesn't spend enough on marketing.
Oh well.
Would it be fair to say that a key difference for you is that the Tesla is bought and paid for /leased and you have to rely on it to get you from A to B.
So, of course, Ford, Waymo, Baidu, Cruise etc seem more impressive autonomous offerings simply because you don't have to put up with any of...
No one has Full Self Driving.
What you're looking at is Curated Self Driving, Partial Self Driving, Ringfenced Self Driving, Restricted Self Driving....
Same old party tricks and sleight of hand.
Far from Full.
Yes "everyone has caught up" as long as you repeat the same old mistake and believe their press releases and curated videos.
And caught up to what exactly?
Everyone including Tesla just have cars covered with sensors of varying ridiculousness, providing the same old cruise control and a bit of...
There is a hidden cargo area below the floor of the boot instead.
