Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

I think he is suggesting an April fool’s joke.

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Funny, I remember you taking delivery of your Model 3 right around same time I did back in 2018. I sold mine in early November (36k miles, $47k to givemethevin), and am scheduled to pickup my MYP this Saturday. It looks like we are on the same cycle.

    Thinking of ordering again

I believe current policy is you can hold for a max of 30 days, and only within the first 90 days of the order. I'm not sure if you can hold on day 89 to push it out another 30 days to maximize, or not. Either way, your desired delivery date would be far out of the hold window if ordered today.

    Did you have a VIN?

    MYP Estimated delivery date

It looks like a lot of us have EDDs in the second half of march. oD 11/4 here. And current EDD is 3/18-3/31. NJ

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Those look like induction wheels to me. If so, another LR variant.

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

This guy does a great job of mapping out potential range and performance improvements with the 4680s. He uses actual math...I know.

Same specs for MY at Austin?

This will be like the Intel/AMD (and similar) changeover for quite awhile, where you won't really know what you'll get until you're assigned a VIN. You'll be "promised" the minimum, which is the current spec, and hit the lottery if you get anything more with a 4680 build. My guess is they won't...

Built in Austin? Look for the "A" in VIN digit 11

carsdirect may be pulling the wrong numbers. Currently listed curb weights for 2022 non structural battery pack are 4363lbs for LR and 4398lbs For MYP, per the Tesla site.

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Interesting if 2170s are coming out of Austin, as it counters what was said on the Q4 earnings call by both Elon & his crew.
  11. rob968

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Yes, it’s the US site. They updated it around the end of last week. The curb weights dropped a little, and also are now different between the P and LR. Possibly taking wheel/tire and brake weight differences into account now, or accounting for the lithium 12/15v replacing SLA. Nobody knows what...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Current curb weights on the Tesla site are 4363lbs for LR and 4398lbs for the P.
  13. rob968

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Agreed. I am suggesting that the spec change on the website does take into account the 12/15v lithium battery (and wheel/tire + brake differences between LR/P), but not the 4680s. I should have been more clear, thanks for keeping me straight!
  14. rob968

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Fwiw, the images of the vehicle structure on Tesla.com still show the “old” non-structural battery pack design. The brakes and wheels on the MYP are heavier than the LR, so perhaps they are simply getting more granular with the specs while also updating to include changes such as the above...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Haha. "Nobody could find the VIN"
  16. rob968

    Model Y P or Model 3 LR?

Same exact situation here. Loved the 3LR, but always wished I went for the 3P. Especially with the MYP only $5k more than the MYLR right now, it was easier to justify than when I was making the same decision on the 3. of course the EDD is falling right on the brink of the Austin ramp, so time...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

This guy goes through all the math and answers a lot of questions around potential range and performance improvements by reducing weight. In a nutshell, he theorizes that if the same kW pack size is used as in the current Y, the curb weight drops to a hair under 4000lbs. His math says that...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

I checked Tesla.com on Dec 3, 2020 using the wayback machine, and the curb weight is listed as 4416lbs, FWIW.
  19. rob968

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

According to the specs on Tesla.com, the current Y curb weight is 4416lbs.

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Those numbers are helpful. GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, which is essentially that maximum loaded weight the vehicle can handle. It definitely provides insight into changes to the platform, but curb weight is more relevant to this chat.

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

If I remember that video correctly, he used Model 3 wheels for the fastest run, and the diameter on those tires is smaller than on stock Y tires. He essentially changed the gear ratio which assisted in the 0-60 reduction.
  22. rob968

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

This makes sense. Probably give us a modest uptick, but not give away the farm.

Are you allowed to share if the batch is going out with 4680s?

    Recent MYP Delivery Estimates

Try givemethevin. They were the highest for me.
  25. rob968

Do you think Tesla is limiting the MYP's launch performance to not compete with the M3P

Same general tire diameter, or did that shrink? Smaller diameter effectively changes the gear ratio and will have an impact on 0-60.
  26. rob968

Do you think Tesla is limiting the MYP's launch performance to not compete with the M3P

Was that the test where they used smaller diameter tires, as well? I think they threw on some model 3 wheels/tires?

Audio system changed to 13 speakers?

More detail from Sawyer Merritt: • Updated Speaker Count: There are now 13 speakers (from 14) plus subwoofer: Tesla has removed the center instrument panel speaker. Tesla says they did this to reduce complexity and redundancy with no appreciable difference in sound quality, and the new speaker...

Do we know how Shanghai faired with early production vehicles? It would be an interesting benchmark.
  29. rob968

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

It feels like this makes the most sense for production start in Austin. Much easier to justify different tech in a higher end model, plus it’s lower volume than LR so lower requirement for 4680 supply as that ramps up (assuming they even roll out with 4680s).
  30. rob968

Audio system changed to 13 speakers?

I believe they changed the period in ~October from 12 months to 30 days.
  31. rob968

Audio system changed to 13 speakers?

Agreed, but the website said "14" yesterday, where it says 13 today. I have Visualping notify me of site changes, and it popped up today. Probably a nothing, but a curiosity nevertheless.
  32. rob968

Audio system changed to 13 speakers?

It looks like the specs for the Y on Tesla's website changed from 14 speakers to 13. Did anyone else notice this? I wonder what changed, if anything.

Tesla EV Tax Credits coming back?

Who knows the real story, but the media is painting a picture of Manchin potentially softening. From the linked article: Manchin told reporters after the call he and Biden had “a nice conversation” and that he is “engaged” with the president. He said he and Biden “were just talking” about...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Tesla quietly started using 82kWh instead of 75kWh batteries in Ys earlier this year, so there is a precedent. That being said it seems the cleanest way to produce Ys with two different specs would be to start with MYPs (lower volume, higher line) in Austin with the new spec, while producing...

Model Y - Gigafactory Texas Production

Good stuff! It will be very interesting to see what upgrades they kick out at start of production (AMD, structural battery pack, 4680, etc). My guess is they will start with MYP since it’s lower volume and higher in the line. I’m also curious if the presumably lighter weight and potentially...

Model Y Range LR Vs Performance

What is the seat of the pants feel between the two?
  39. rob968

Model Y Range LR Vs Performance

I agree with all these points. It was a different equation when there was a $10k delta between the LR & P, rather than the current $5k delta. If you aren't a fan of the Geminis and plan to upgrade to the inductions on the LR, then the delta is now only $3k. Then if you are considering the boost...

For a sanity check, make sure lane departure warning isn’t turned on. That will “vibrate” the wheel when the car thinks you’re drifting out of the lane.

    Recent MYP Delivery Estimates

My EDD has been Jan 7- Feb 4 since I placed the order, and hasn’t shifted at all. I am kind of surprised it hasn’t wiggled around, considering all the movement I see from others.

    Recent MYP Delivery Estimates

The one thing that should give you solace is trade in prices seem to be dropping substantially since last month. I'm sure it varies by model and buying franchise, but I sold my 2018 Model 3 to givemethevin last month for $47k. At the time, Carvana was offering $42k. I ran my VIN through Caravana...

Mother of God! Have you seen the prices on Carvana?

Same here for a 2018 Model 3 DM.

Thoughts about MYP uncorked more to beat competition?

I think we might see a bump in the performance numbers once the front casting with structural battery packs (and 4680 batteries) come online. With a potential drop in weight of up to ~10%, that alone gives Tesla an easy option of improving the numbers.

Want MY from Austin not Fremont

Everything is an educated guess, and the guess slowly becomes more accurate over time as more information is revealed. At this point, we know Texas is ramping up and working on pre production Y’s. Documentation was recently filed with the state showing an anticipated completion date of the first...

    Another Price Increase? 11/11
