Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

The video was recorded by me in Ohio I guess I wrote the caption wrong, I don't have AM, only FM. I did the tuner install myself, as well as MCU2 etc

The first AP1 car upgraded to MCU2

It can definitely be updated to the right firmware after the mcu2 install Yes, you can do a tuner2 to it after the mcu2 install as well

The first AP1 car upgraded to MCU2

No I didn't buy new from Tesla, that would be far too expensive. I bought used on eBay. For smaller things like harnesses I bought from Tesla There's some repinning involved for the mcu2 retrofit with pre-facelift cars but it's trivial work. My car is facelift ap1 so everything was plug and play

https://twitter.com/greentheonly/status/1270550487486672896 Yes we can expect it now Yes plug and play. I changed tuner to tuner2 so I kept am/fm. My car has XM too but I didn't buy a tuner with XM, that's on my list. Tips tricks are reported in the other thread I posted, by Kyle That's my...

The first AP1 car upgraded to MCU2

The benefits are described on Tesla's page better than I can explain: Infotainment Upgrade There's no benefit to the actual autopilot system if that's what you're asking My car is still under full bumper-bumper warranty

The first AP1 car upgraded to MCU2

For those asking about a guide: The process is the same as if you're upgrading an AP2+ car to MCU2, and there's already tutorials written to do that like this excellent one by Kyle I retrofit MCU2, IC2, Tuner2, and FSD Computer into my HW2.0 Car (just ignore the FSD upgrade part of the guide)...

The first AP1 car upgraded to MCU2

Tesla Infotainment Upgrade You need v2020.20.12 for it to work completely with AP1/0. I did the install myself rather than pay Tesla. Let me know if you have any questions!

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I have no idea what this is doing, I'm pretty sure though that I have US. US is set in my gateway config, and I get firmware updates still. Perhaps the firmware defaults to EU AP in some odd bug if it can't find any GPS signal, not sure how mobileye is working here...

It's not a direct fit unless you get the mount adapter, see photo here (which is incidentally taken by @kdday !) Tesla confirms infotainment system upgradeability from MCU1 to MCU2 for $2500
  33. rjscoder

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

You still need to buy the mount, it won't come with the $250 tuner from Tesla. Unfortunately I don't know the part for this and could not find it on EPC
  34. rjscoder

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

I agree, it's not even all that difficult to install. They're already pulling out the entire MCU & IC, so the least they can do is run some basic wiring to the tuner2 location. They even have a mount adapter that plugs right up into tuner1 location to install tuner2 nice and snug

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

They don't need to "include" anything, what they need to do is release firmware for mcu2 that supports ap1 :). It's purely a software issue
  38. rjscoder

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

Factory mcu2 cars don't have a gps antenna where the cid resides, their antenna resides at the APE unit further away. This means they never intended on using the ublox gps on-board mcu2. On ap2+ cars, tesla uses the gps board of the ape (thats where the gps antenna is plugged into). For ap1/0...

Tesla infotainment system upgradeable from MCU1 to MCU2

FWIW the retrofit on an ap1/0 car will work, but no gps when the retrofit is complete. Your car wil be stuck at fremont CA Also the speed limit sign is in a round circle, and no lane markings show https://i.imgur.com/uVNKBTA.mp4

Should I try and wait out for an MCU 2 to replace my MCU1?

When facelift cars first came out with ap1
  43. rjscoder

Should I try and wait out for an MCU 2 to replace my MCU1?

Well tesla stated themselves that they will offer it to ap1 in May. And the autopilot software is self contained in the mobileye unit, not on the mcu. mcu just uses the data mobileye gives it , and this communication fully works in mcu2 (i have ap1 , retrofitted to mcu2 )
  44. rjscoder

MCU1 upgrade - Radio and XM

Requires the new mcu2 harness to tuner2, and of course the new tuner2 unit itself. You can't keep the old tuner with mcu2. You'll also either need toolbox, or just gwxfer to update the internal.dat with an unlocked gateway.
  45. rjscoder

MCU1 upgrade - Radio and XM

Nope, they wouldn't do that. They have one job, and it's to give you mcu2 without radio. To do anything else would be going against what Tesla is publicly stating. For example when they installed a new windshield for me, the heated wiper area connector was left dangling. Rather than plugging it...

MCU1 upgrade - Radio and XM

If you have service center upgrade you to mcu2, they're going to completely disable your tuner via an internal config setting on your mcu2. So even if you get the harness, you'll either have to plead with them to enable it after telling them you installed tuner yourself, or find another way to...
