AP - Can you have installed?

Ok all. Here is a dumb question from a newbie. Can AP get installed on a car that did not come with it in 2914?

I am not as interested to drive my car down the street in auto pilot as much as I really would love to have the summons feature....

For all practical purposes, no. One member here did it himself, at significant cost and with expert-level knowledge.

The answer to the question "can AP be added to an early Model S" is YES.

But it doesn't make sense. Installing AP requires disassembling much of the car, running new wiring harnesses, making body changes to accommodate the sensors, ...

The cost of making those changes would likely be a significant portion, if not more than, the book value of those early Model S cars.

Owners of AP1 cars would also likely be interested in "can AP1 be upgraded to AP2" - and the answer is probably going to be the same. Even with the AP1 sensors, it's likely that a similar amount of work would be required to replace the AP1 hardware with AP2 - making it cost-prohibitive for an upgrade. But it likely could be done, if someone didn't car about how much money they spent - though if that's the case, why not trade-in and get a newer car???
