Auto rain sensing wipers do not start when it rains

Once I manually start the wiper, then when put in AUTO they only wipe as needed, but they never turn on themselves the first time, even though they are in auto. Am i doing something wrong?

Interesting; the last couple of mornings have been cool enough for dew on the windshield (3 is outside at night right now). I found it amusing the car wipes the window once, sometimes twice, once I'm driving forward... so it appears to sense the moisture.
