Also, would someone knowledgeable please explain why Tesla switches off brake assist when driver attempts to maneuver around the obstacle, while for example Volvo tries to additionally assist the maneuvre? With traction control the rule of thumb is to keep brake pressed while maneuvring around obstacle. Thanks.
Imagine driving in the middle lane of a freeway and encountering a stopped car. Your split second decisions are to either slam on the brakes and stop in time, or swerve around. If the car suddenly reduced your speed by slamming on the brakes, it may have cost you your opportunity to swerve around the obstacle because now you're traveling too slow relative to the cars in adjacent lanes.
It would definitely be nice to see Tesla catch up to Mercedes, Audi, and Volvo in having an "emergency steering assist" system that helps drivers swerve without losing control. There's been a lot of stories here of near-misses with suddenly jerking the wheel away from AP resulting in fish tailing.
