California License Plate/registration time

Just picked my car up December 31st in Southern California. Wondering what wait time people are experiencing to get their permanent plates and registration?

IIRC, it was about a month because plates are sent to the SC and then they sent them to me. My HOV stickers took just about 45 days and I ordered them about 2 weeks after I bought the car, even before the plates came..

How were you able to apply for the HOV stickers? Don't you need the registration to come first (which comes with the plates)?

Nope, somehow the new paper plate numbers are on file with DMV and so I used the paper plate number and VIN on the application and DMV somehow correlated the two and when the sticker arrived it was issued to my metal plate number and VIN.

So here's how I know the paper plate numbers are in DMV's system. My 3 was delivered to my house in South OC. The kid that delivered it, I think his name was Mel Enial, took the 73 Toll Road from the Costa Mesa SC to my place with out benefit of a transponder. So a couple weeks later I get a citation through the mail from Fastrak referencing my paper plate number and current address. Luckily I have a FT account so once I added the paper lic number to my account the fine went away and just the normal access rate was applied. It was still tacky of the kid, but not worth arguing with the SC.

I can't believe the delivery guy drove on the toll road and not tell you. And I guess the paper plate purpose worked. It was designed to track new cars so they can't drive on toll road for free, hit and run, or other things. Actually I read that even before paper plate, people were able to get HoV decal before getting the plate. They just left the license plate number blank and DMV was able to match it with the vin number.

Great. I was assuming since the paper plates were different numbers, we had to wait to apply. Too bad the stickers are such a terrible color this year...

They are different numbers, so the VIN must be the controlling factor.

Yeah, my 3 is blue and they look awful. I still think they should just issue a special HOV plate or a sticker for the plates, but sticking those ugly stickers on just about every corner of the car is simply ridiculous and overkill (who even looks on the left side of the car?).

I would report it, for no other reason than advising Tesla about this. If I were in your shoes, I would report it and tell Tesla that I wasn't looking for compensation, but wanted to let them know.

I'm probably an outlier with a CPO, but picked up 11/16, still waiting for plates and reg (temp tags expire in 2 weeks). I've been emailing the delivery specialist every 2 weeks since the 5-6th week, but was told to sit tight. The Sacramento DMV field office tells me that they are waiting on Tesla for incomplete paperwork \o/

Anyone know what happens if the 90-day deadline passes?
