Or was the car awake enough to trigger cabin overheat protection? Ie at some point within previous 12 hours a door had been opened, perhaps from an earlier drive?

Does venting the window actually make a difference? On all my other cars, leaving the windows and/or sunroof open seemed to do absolutely nothing with regards to interior temperature. All it did was make it so I had all sorts of bugs flying around inside my car. (All my windows (sans windshield) are already tinted @ 22%. The only thing that made a noticeable difference was when I got a Heat Shield sunshade for the windshield.. Which is why all my cars now have one of those.

Yes! It makes a big difference! Any air can flow through. Hotter air is going to be near the top of the window and rise up. Cooler air will replace it.
Interiors can be damaged by high temperatures so even a minor difference could mean the difference between parts ageing / failing!

My main concern about venting is flies, spiders or detritus getting inside the car. At least with Cabin Overheat Protection the air is going through filters, even if it does require some power.
