cant simultaneously connect Iphone and iPod on model s bluetooth

I use my ipod for listening to books on tape. When I have it connected to the model s bluetooth my iphone will not work through the cars speaker system.
Any suggestions how to be hands free and use both devices?

You can only connect one Bluetooth device at a time.

Not sure if it'll work if you connect your iPod via USB and phone via Bluetooth; anyone tried that?

Plugging in an iOS device doesn't help as they aren't recognized by the car.

Does your iPhone have enough room to store your top 10 audiobooks maybe on it? Could then just use your iPhone and use the iPod for any ones that aren't on be iPhone.
