Elon Musk trip in Hongkong. A translated post from autohome.com.cn https://translate.google.com/transl...n/bbs/thread-c-2357-49281970-1.html&edit-text=

Also paste the youtube video here (credit to short term thread)

I'm wondering what's the purpose of this visit? Last March Elon visited Boao forum in China, then a few tweets signified the bottom of last big correction from 290-->180.

Perhaps he wishes to say "Thank you" in person to a city that may become a world leader in electric vehicles

Musk also praised the Hong Kong government’s policies for promoting electric vehicles as “excellent”. “We receive a lot more support from the Hong Kong government than from the mainland China government in electric vehicles,” said Musk, who said high import duties and a lack of local incentives make the cost of a Tesla car in China greater than anywhere else.

Few equally important reasons for the visit

Musk will meet Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying today, hoping to discuss bringing Tesla’s full Autopilot package to drivers in the city, after the company disabled some of its autopilot features that are still under review by the Transport Department.

He confirmed that Tesla is investigating options for local production on the mainland this year and hopes reveal more details in mid-2016.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is currently in Hong Kong to participate in the StartmeupHK tech forum. While in the country, the CEO took some time to share a few new information about how Tesla is doing in Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as the automaker’s future plans in the country.

Cool, great to have some good news in those times of weak markets.

Around 5min into the video Elon mentions they will have talks with officials about reactivating autopilot again, sounds like that was at least one of the reasons for the trip.

Model X news from China:
1) China reservation holders getting invited for configuraiton;
2) Tesla will provide Signature P90D to China customers with price tag about $225K; (there was no signature model S for China customers)
3) Pricing: Signature P90D 1,479,500 RMB; 90D (961,000-1,171,800 RMB)

Link in Chinese: http://club.autohome.com.cn/bbs/thread-c-2357-49462525-1.html

China customers made model X reservation later than EU customers, but TM prioritizes the configuration for them. So TM has high expectation for model X sales in China I guess. It could be a small catalyst in this week, the headline might be "Tesla Motors opens model X configuration for non-NA markets" :)

Tesla's Model X Poised to Enter China

Tesla Motors expects to begin shipping its Model X in China by June, opening what will likely be the second market for the electric SUV after the U.S.
The decision about the timing, announced by the company in a blog post on Tuesday, illustrates the importance of the world’s biggest car market. European countries like Germany and Norway have shipment dates in the second half of the year.

Tesla is crazy if they open a factory in China. They completely misunderstood the market there when they started selling, not understanding that people ordered to be able to re sell their place in the order queue, and that people want the latest car. ( the introduction of the D was a problem )

The "partners" in the factory will steal their intellectual property without question. They should go to Indonesia or Vietnam or even better, stay in the US.

you are so biased. how come Apple has its iphone/ipad manufacturing all in China?

Yeah, I agree....the Chinese will steal what Tesla comes up with in terms of technology ! They steal from us in huge amounts using Chinese military backed ' so called independent groups ' to steal secrets from US companies by hacking the websites and thru Chinese spies who work in Silicon Valley and other US tech companies and our stupid government.

We we are idiots ! This is an internet based economic war and we need to fight back and destroy the ability to steal from us and commit economic fraud and sabotage.

It is really our fault because we as a counry are stupid and dumb. We need to protect our interests for the next 15-20 years, after which China will have negative growth from their populations demographics and aging of their human resource base due to the past one child policy. That aging and demographics and the corruption in China will affect China after 2035 in a big way. Until then we need to fight this economy and internet based economic spy war that China is waging against us.

I think Apple made the hardware and software combination right to make it difficult to create clones. However if there's any possible way to copy, they will copy and sell. Japanese did that after the WWII, and now China. At least I wouldn't manufacture components with key competitiveness (I.e. battery) in China. That's why China wants to have the battery plant there.

Chinese investment: Panasonic to build green-car battery plant in China- Nikkei Asian Review
Prismatic cells only.

You do know Tesla open-sourced their patents and their goal is "to accelerate the advent of sustainable transportation"? And, by the time someone has successfully cloned a product, at the rate of innovation Tesla is at, the clone is not the latest and greatest any more, and you know what that means for the Chinese market. Then, think about superchargers or firmware updates- I think Tesla would be able to exclude clones, and what is the value of a Tesla without that?

Tesla did not disclose all their trade secrets. Trade secrets are not the same as patents.

Elon Musk has discussed the problem of partnering with a Chinese company and maintaining their trade secrets.

They are not giving away their proprietary software re auto pilot, battery cell management, control of motors etc.
