Climate Change / Global Warming Discussion

Global average temperature was more than 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than the pre-industrial average for several months in late 2023. That doesn't mean we've already breached the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

In fact the Global Temperature Deviation of 2023 was 1.48C.
We will see what will happen in 2024 but this situation has to be kept strictly under control.

Azerbaijan, which is hosting this year’s UN climate talks, plans to increase its fossil fuel production by a third over the next decade, according to an analysis shared exclusively with the Guardian.

The forecast indicates the Cop29 host will grow its annual gas production by about 12bn cubic metres (bcm) over the next 10 years, which is considered a crucial period in which global leaders must cut fossil fuel production if they hope to limit global heating.

Scientists have long known that bottom trawling – the practice of dragging massive nets along the seabed to catch fish – churns up carbon from the sea floor. Now, for the first time, researchers have calculated just how much trawling releases into the atmosphere: 370m tonnes of planet-heating carbon dioxide a year – an amount, they say, that is “too big to ignore”. Over the study period, 1996-2020, they estimated the total carbon dioxide released from trawling to the atmosphere to be 8.5 to 9.2bn tonnes. The scientists described trawling as “marine deforestation” that causes “irreparable harm” to the climate, society and wildlife.

The Greenland ice cap is losing an average of 30m tonnes of ice an hour due to the climate crisis, a study has revealed, which is 20% more than was previously thought. Some scientists are concerned that this additional source of freshwater pouring into the north Atlantic might mean a collapse of the ocean currents called the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc) is closer to being triggered, with severe consequences for humanity.

The scientists said: “There is some concern that any small source of freshwater may serve as a ‘tipping point’ that could trigger a full-scale collapse of the Amoc, disrupting global weather patterns, ecosystems and global food security. Yet freshwater from the glacier retreat of Greenland is not included in oceanographic models at present.” The influx of less dense freshwater into the sea slows the usual process of heavier salty water sinking in the polar region and driving the Amoc

As I said in the post originating this thread if the Amoc will collaps we will have a new Ice Age IMO.
It's the situation described in the movie "The day after tomorrow", which has a scientific ground according to me.

NASA confirmed that 2023 was the hottest year on record. 🌡️ But what caused the year to be so hot? Let’s look at five factors that according to NASA made 2023 be hottest year on record.

1)
2)
3)
4)
5) Lastly, scientists found that the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha‘apai volcanic eruption in 2022 did not substantially add to the record heat.

Western Australia has been sweltering under severe heatwave, but spare a thought for one part of the state where the mercury could pass 50 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
A burst of intense heat caused by multiple low weather systems could cause temperatures to pass that mark over the Pilbara region, in north of WA, reports Weatherzone.
High temperatures are not unusual in the region during early summer. They're triggered by plenty of pre-monsoon sunshine.

The credibility of the Cop28 agreement to “transition away” from fossil fuels rides on the world’s biggest historical polluters like the US, UK and Canada rethinking current plans to expand oil and gas production, according to the climate negotiator representing 135 developing countries.

“As we speak, unless we lie to ourselves, none of the major developed countries, who are the most important historical emitters, have policies that are moving away from fossil fuels, on the contrary, they are expanding,” said Pedroso. These countries must also deliver adequate finance for poorer nations to transition -and adapt to the climate crisis.

“There is a responsibility by the UNFCCC to do research into the implications of atrocities and war against the Palestinian people from an environmental and climate perspective. The impact is not only on emissions, but the whole of the ecosystem particularly for food production and water resources as we know that already the Palestinian people in Gaza are starving. Military emissions are extremely important and cannot be separated – this dimension needs to be tackled because this war of Israel against Palestinian was totally avoidable.”

ALBEDO setting another record low in November 2023 at 28.6%.
As I said previously this means that the Earth not only reflects less sun light, but also absorbs more energy increasing this way the Energy Imbalance.

As I said in the quoted post since the ALBEDO is decreasing correspondigly the Earth's Energy Imbalance is increasing as it can be seen in the reported graph.
The rate of increase of the Earth's Energy Imbalance is worrisome, so don't look up the reported graph.

With 2023 in the books as the hottest year, what is likely to happen in 2024?

Four different groups have all provided estimates for the Temperature Deviation of 2024 which are in the reported graph.

Schmidt slightly less than 1.6C
Met Office slightly less than 1.6C
Berkely Earth more than 1.6C
Carbon Brief more than 1.6C

So in 2024 they all agree that the Temperature Deviation will overtake the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius set by the Agreement of Paris.

Here we have again the graph of the ALBEDO loss over the years.
But we have also the definition of the ALBEDO which is the percentage of solar radiation that is reflected by the Earth.

The concentration of all GHGs (Carbon Dioxide CO2, Methane CH4, Nitrous Oxide NO) in the atmosphere is rising, as it can be seen in the reported graphs, and is getting new records.

CO2 422 ppm (parts per million)
CH4 1927 ppb (parts per billion)
NO 337 ppb (parts per billion)
To this concern I would like to remind that Methane CH4 is a GHG 80 times more powerful than CO2 and Nitrous Oxide NO is a GHG 265 times more powerful than CO2.
