Stop burning stuff.

The government has handed energy companies £22bn in billpayer-backed subsidies to burn wood for electricity despite being unable to prove the industry meets sustainability standards, the government’s spending watchdog has said. The head of the National Audit Office (NAO) has called on the government to rethink how it monitors compliance with its biomass sustainability regime, which has handed about £1bn a year to generators, because the assurances do not provide confidence that the environmental requirements have been met.

Many green campaigners, scientists and MPs are fiercely opposed to burning wood pellets that they claim damages natural ecosystems and increases carbon emissions.

Far more sustainable options have now been developed and improved, such as solar, wind and nuclear power generation, and I call on the government to support these technologies over biomass energy generat
ion.”

From a climate perspective, 2024 is beginning in uncharted territory. Temperatures last year broke records not by small intervals but by big leaps; 2023 was the hottest year ever recorded, and each month in the second half of the year was the hottest—the hottest June, the hottest July, all the way through to December. July was in fact the hottest month in recorded history. Already, experts predict that 2024 is likely to be even hotter.

The climate crisis turned the drought that struck the Amazon rainforest in 2023 into a devastating event, a study has found. The drought was the worst recorded in many places and hit the maximum “exceptional” level on the scientific scale. Without planet-warming emissions from the burning of oil, gas and coal, the drought would have been far less extreme, the analysis found. It also showed the drought was made 30 times more likely to happen by global heating. The return of the natural El Niño climate phenomenon is associated with drier conditions but played only a small role, the scientists said. The climate crisis is supercharging extreme weather across the planet, but the extreme Amazon drought is a stark and worrying example because the rainforest is already thought to be close to a tipping point into a drier state. This would result in a mass die-off of trees in the world’s most important store of carbon on land, releasing large amounts of CO2 and driving global temperatures even higher.

Today is #WorldCleanEnergyDay⚡

According to the United Nations Environment Programme the science is clear. To limit climate change, reliance on fossil fuels needs to end. A clean energy future is unstoppable.
I invite all TMC Members to watch the video in the tweet above reported.

And this is the Biden-Harris decision above mentioned by Former Vice President Al Gore.

This is the way to go. Let's transition away from fossil fuels.

In this video the European Space Agency (ESA) explains how Satellites are used to detect Methane (one the most potent GHGs) Super Emitters and Methane leaks.
Since Methane stays in the atmosphere only 10 years it's convenient to detect it and eliminare Methane Super Emitters and leaks because this way we will get benefits for the Global Warming issue in the short term.

Greta Thunberg says:

'In this enormous challenge that we are facing we are going to need EVERYONE to take action. We need every single person on this planet to be a climate activist. Please join the climate movement.'

I invite all TMC Members to watch the video by Greta which is above reported.
To this concern I wish to point out that being a climate activist doesn't mean only to join public demonstrations as Greta does.
For instance I never join public demonstrations but I consider myself a Climate activist because I fight the Climate Change issue by studying it from a scientific point of view.
You can be a Climate activist also by driving an EV or by installing on the roof of your house solar panels. Main thing is that you do efforts to work out the Climate Change issue.

ESA is monitoring not only Methane but also Carbon Dioxide (which is another GHG) Emissions with the new CO2M mission.
The Copernicus Carbon Dioxide Monitoring mission, or CO2M for short, is one of Europe's Copernicus Sentinel Expansion missions and will be the first to measure how much carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere specifically through human activity.

If we review these five effects, it is easy to see why warming in the Arctic Circle has the potential to cause the collapse of civilization. The imminent disasters include: Sea level rise from Greenland meltwater and AMOC collapse causing the destruction of coastal cities Crop failures Droughts and floods Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane levels that accelerate global warming even more Global weather pattern disruptions Marine die offs All these effects combined together, and interacting with each other, will be enough to cause the collapse.

Actually the Arctic is warming 4 times faster than Planet Earth because, since ice is melting at the Arctic also the ALBEDO is lowering, and more Energy coming from the sun is absorbed by the Arctic as I explained in a previous post.
The article mentioned by @mspohr, which lists the 5 effects caused by the melting of the Arctic, is really worrisome. So I please don't look it up.

In this video ESA better explains the Copernicus Carbon Dioxide Monitoring mission, or CO2M for short.
CO2M mission manages to detect with precision Carbon Dioxide CO2 produced by combustion because it has 2 Instruments detecting Carbon Dioxide CO2 and Nitrogen Dioxide NO2 respectively. Carbon Dioxide CO2 is a well known GHG, while Nitrogen Dioxide NO2 is a gas which is mainly produced by internal combustion engines, as combustion temperatures are high enough to thermally combine some of the nitrogen and oxygen in the air to form NO2. Outdoors, NO2 can be a result of traffic from motor vehicles.
This way CO2M mission manages to distinguish Carbon Dioxide CO2 produced by Internal Combustion Engines, which causes Anthropogenic Warming, from Carbon Dioxide CO2 belonging to the natural Carbon Cycle of the Earth.
The CO2M mission has also another Instrument useful to detect Methane CH4 which is a powerful GHG.

In this graph you can see how the Global Ocean Heat Content increase in the period from 1950 to 2023.
The light blue colored area represents depths from 0 to 700 metres, while the dark blue colored area represents depths from 700 metres to 2000 metres.
Not only this. In the following article you can read all the records that have been broken in 2023.

The ESA Earth Observation Department is committed to track changes in Carbon Dioxide CO2 and Methane CH4 from space enabling this way scientists to improve models and predict future global warming.
