He's been key in all kinds of work including: Phase Reluctance Electric motors in Teslas, Octovalve and superpump integrated heating/cooling design, Raptor Space-X methane dual-regenerative rocket engines, use of stainless-alloy metal skins instead of carbon-composite for Starship re-entry heat sheild... and yes before you rant, there were of course other smart people involved on the projects.

I won’t rant, but I have also been key in all kinds of engineering work…. Key meaning asking questions “can we do this” “why not” “ok get it done”

aaah. Elon specifically stated the goal of opening up superchargers... my guess is as good as yours on why the sudden change of mind. hint: billions in free government money - to which Tesla never ever said no in its history.

You are both right. The feds will be spending money to add chargers on (favored) highways and byways, including turnpikes. The latter are particularly problematic for Tesla as they require all EV access. If Elon wants to get in on new EV charging stations on heavily used -- and controlled roads -- he has no choice but accept the all-access rules. Even if he didn't want the free money, if he wants to install chargers along Toll Roads, for example, he has to open his charging network. That doesn't mean he will start adding CCS to existing superchargers anytime soon.

You can search for "about Mastodon" to find articles explaining the basics. Currently it is free and there are no ads. Interest in Mastodon has soared recently so there is no shortage of articles about it. I think there are about 2 million Mastodon users. I hope growth does not ruin it.
Yesterday I followed someone's link to it and it took forever to load. Clearly not ready for the influx that happened. I guess they can thank Elon for driving traffic to them.

initially Tesla had:

- vehicle specs (range/ performance/ charging speed)
- no competition (nothing out there competing with them)
- charging network

as selling points.

now this is down to:

- but the competition can't produce enough of them!!
- charging network

not very future proof unless Tesla improves service support/ build quality/ vehicle appearance for the price point ...
Where is FSD in this analysis?

What exactly has Elon engineered?

I really want to know because I keep reading that he’s not an engineer but a salesman and advertisement specialist…..
Please see for yourself. I encourage you to watch this geek-to-geek interview Elon did with the Everyday Astronaut (Tim Dodd):

Elon ended up making a change to the design of Starship based on a question Tim asks in the interview. I am a scientist and engineer. My dad was a engineer who designed rockets at Edwards Air Force Base (where I was born). Elon is absolutely an engineer. And a very good one. As you can see from his (drunk uncle at the reunion level of embarrassing) Twitter fiascos, he is not a great salesperson or advertisement specialist. He hasn't needed to be because the products he engineers are so good, they don't need advertising.

Thank you, I will go ahead and watch this.

Actually Tesla brand has some “cachet”.

As long as Elon’s Twitter / political saga doesn’t damage the brand, we are fine.

I would add that he is excellent at creating controversy, which, in turn, explodes his metrics. He’s not nuts.
