Fit & Finish Issues Plaguing Model Y

I picked up a new MY that was manufactured on 06/15/20 and here is my experience:

Build: Black/Black/LRAWD/Inductions/Tow Hitch

Summary of issues at delivery, with my thoughts for not rejecting:
  1. All 4 bottom window trims are not aligned front-back with the door they're attached to. They're all pushed toward the rear of the car probably a 1/2 to 3/4 of a centimeter or so
    • Window trims are an easy replacement and are replaced all the time; delivery specialist noted as needing fix
  2. Very small amount of paint scratched off rear quarter panel right where the window trim attaches
    • I didn't want to accept missing paint, but ultimately this was a very small example that should be quick for them to touch up before I have it PPFd
  3. The 2 rear rims had damage that had been painted over already
    • I am told service will replace anew
  4. Very minor scuffs/scratches to plastic a few places inside
    • Annoying on new car but in the scheme of things, I'm sure I'll be adding more scuffs/scratches soon
  5. Left rear inner door panel not fully snapped into actual door on the bottom; you can see a gap and the clips not being clicked in
    • Seems like this should be easy for service to fix
  6. Steering wheel tracks maybe 1-3 degrees to the right when going straight
    • Should be easy fix
  7. All 4 doors could use some adjustment/alignment
    • Very common on Teslas and it's a relatively minor issue that many won't notice. It's just something i want to have handled prior to having it fully PPFd. Specifically I want the back edge of the front doors to align with the front edge of the rear doors (currently the front door sits a little further out than the rear door on one side, and on the other the front sits further out on the top while the rear sits further out on the bottom), and the rear edge of the rear doors to not protrude further than the trim/panel they close into. Again, these are minor amounts, but I was even admiring a new Honda accord on the way home because it has more intricate character lines and all 4 doors were aligned perfectly top, bottom, along rocker panel, etc. I wouldn't reject delivery for this because I've owned 2 prior Teslas and door alignment like this is ALWAYS an issue, and I've seen worse examples than my MY. So, the replacement VIN would likely be the same/worse. If Tesla SC can't/won't fix, I'll pay labor at a good Tesla body shop and I'm certain someone can get the doors aligned nicely.
  8. Taillight alignment
    • At some point they'll probably have a fix for this, but until they do I'll assume ~all MYs have this issue
Note: the seat issue appears to be fixed from factory as it is not an issue at all on mine. Also, I find the heat pump to be very quiet so maybe they all have the added insulation from factory now.

Did you quality check their touch up? Here is mines and now sent to body shop for repairs. I wouldn't trust the SC for any touch up.

The rear seat issue has been corrected at factory and there is a new part added to heatpump. Name: Heatpump cover. I'm waiting to see if they are going to retrofit on mine. Careful with the "easy fix" label. 3 months 3 service appointments and still fixing the "easy stuff" already have another issue for service appointment#4. #easyfix

Have they give you a rental or Uber credit during all these SC appointments?

Would you post a pic of your rear seats so I can see the alignment? Wondering what it looks like compared to mine.

My "rear seat issue" was actually nothing at all, just a mistake on my part. The right seat had been reclined, which I forgot was possible, and when I adjusted it surprise! All aligned... (heavy sigh here....)

There was an issue with it there the 40 section has a misalignment, tesla released a "fix", you received a unit that already had the implemented rear seat revision. Also, Yes, the tilting can be mistaken for issue.

Even though they had 3 weeks due to rescheduling my appt, for parts delay, they were out of loaners and said uber credits where available and "thank me for my understanding..." So at least for Eatonville, FL, I got *sugar*. and I live 1 hr from there so the credits are useless for me, I Just use an ICE vehicle I still got... I have never gotten a loaner to from them, always out or not available etc... My other 2 were "Mobile" Those have worked ok for know.

Thought I would share my Model Y delivery experience (first post to TMC).

I picked up my Model Y LR AWD on Thursday (June 18) at the Fremont Delivery Center using their human-free delivery method (VIN 15,7XX). The process went smoothly. Tesla requested via the express pickup email that I take the car home and inspect it there. I drove it home without talking to or seeing any Tesla employees. The email also says "any service concerns can be addressed and uploaded through your mobile app within 12-hours of your pick up." From the app it wasn't clear to me how to upload any service concerns so I made a mobile service request to see what would happen. I also emailed my issues to my Tesla Delivery Team Advisor. The service request got rejected because the mobile team said they couldn't fix those issues via their mobile service. My advisor said that he would report my issues to the resolutions team. I haven't heard from the resolutions team yet.

Here are the issues that I noticed:
- Automatic rear hatch will not latch properly when automatically closed on level ground (has failed 5 out of 5 times on level ground but worked on driveway when pointed up hill)
- Ordered with trailer hitch, but the trailer hitch is not there
- Only came with one key card in the folded paper wallet instead of two (makes me wonder if I got someone's rejected Tesla)
- Rear hatch and rear driver-side passenger side are misaligned
- Front passenger-side door handle is further inset than the other three handles
- The steering wheel is clocked to clockwise a few degrees when driving straight
- The clothes hanger on one side will not stay closed.

The paint seems okay, but I am not the best person for finding those issues (not that observant when it comes to paint).

I think I checked everything else and it seemed to work fine (folding down rear seats, mirrors, charging, etc.).

This is my first Tesla (more than double the cost of any vehicle I have bought previously). My previous vehicle is a $25k Ford Escape. The Model Y is supposed to be a direct replacement.

I took the Tesla for a 200+ mile drive on Saturday, and it performed well. I really like the adaptive cruise control - makes driving far more relaxing. Autopilot was good except for the constant need to remind it that I am paying attention.

Congrats on the purchase, Yes, unfortunately, tesla MY seems to have an issue with whatever section is putting together the rear hatch, this is a known issue now in the community, that's become common. The solution is to make a Service Center Appt have them realigned. Do remind them to touch up the paint where they moved screws, they tend to be sloppy with these little details. The clothes hangers are crap, had mine replaced, similar issue but reverse, mine didn't want to pop out, and you seem to be getting the new hiccup this round, steering alignment issues, again on that same appointment put in an alignment service request as well. As for the Tow hitch, here's the fun part, they are pushing the sales so much that they matched you with whatever color trim was near to sell,( which can include a declined delivery) but not necessarily because someone actually got hands-on, they could have chosen to decline. Tesla seems to have opted to "retrofit" the tow bars hence, that's why some people are getting the hitch from factory others not. So now its play the waiting game to get them to install it for you, aka whenever the part is available, on that SC appointment add it and have them follow up. Positive, it has been posted that ppl have been told mobile service could be an option. They keycard looks more like fudge, ask for your second ley, you are sold 2 per vehicle. I will say again the delivery centers, must be given a mandatory checklist of things not to miss. Hopefully, you can knock off all those issues in one or 2 shots, im onmy 3rd today, and pending a 4th.

I was driving past the storage parking lot in Bellevue WA yesterday and stopped off to see if there were many Y's. I thought I might spot a few issues, but was amazed at the number of exterior issues that were present on every Y I looked at. The delivery centers must be slammed trying to fix these problems as best as they can. Tesla must realize how bad these cars are when they leave the factory and until they sort out the production issues have no choice but to leave it to delivery centers to fix.

The most common problems - misaligned taillights, driver-side door/mirror alignment, charging panel sticking out, huge gaps around the trunk, huge gaps and misalignment between panels, doors, bumpers, hood.

I have a 2019 X and really think Tesla is an amazing company, but they have to start getting the fundamentals right on fit and finish.

Thank you for the feedback. Tesla sent me a text message with a phone number to call to setup a service center appointment. I called and now have an appointment for next week.

JD Powers has confirmed what all the non-fanbois knew . . . Tesla fit/finish SUCKS! JD Power study: Tesla electric vehicles have worst initial quality Accepting apologies from all those making excuses for Tesla.

Mic drop . . .
One thing notable is that you constantly bash Tesla. I'm curious as to what your purpose is other than to disparage?
(By the way, the JD Powers survey was "unofficial." They probably found owners off this board - the whiners - and thought those are representative.)

They shared their methodology. They're "unofficial" because some states require manufacturer approval to poll owners. In those states Tesla denied access, so they used only data from states where Tesla can't block access.

Realistically, Tesla knew they'd do poorly by this metric. They tried to stop it, but it got published anyway.

So they are asserting that JDP found and successfully queried 2,400 existing MY owners?

The same can be said about you rxlawdude, you're constantly criticizing people who has anything negative to say about Tesla. Am I a Tesla fanboy because I bought the Y? Am I now a Tesla hater because I returned it for quality issues I didn't want to deal with? I think I would consider myself impartial, I just want a good and well-made car for my $60K. You seem to like to tell people what they should or should not do with "their" car.

I don't think the sampling was limited to Model Y. You'll have to find another hole. Perhaps another personal attack will make you feel better. ;):p

No, the problem is people like reeler seem to believe that the problems they are seeing are representative of the whole. They do not qualify with "some," it's implied to be "all." And for the record, your posting history is one of skepticism and doubt from the beginning. There are a lot of people with ulterior motives that post here, and then the press picks those malcontents' posts as representative. That's an issue with social media.

And if my MY I'm picking up today has problems or not, I'll be posting my experience. I'm armed with a checklist covering the problem areas that have been noted by some.

There are a core group of folks that immediately launch a personal attack with research on prior posts, etc. when there is anything but glowing Tesla adoration on this forum. I suspect they are paid astroturfers or shareholders or just cultists. There are probably short sellers on the other side too. I have never owned Tesla stock or shorted it.

I have sent Tesla hundreds of thousands of dollars going way back to the early days of their existence so feel entitled to demand more from them. Contrary thought, if heard, makes a company stronger. Adoring apologists will not. This JD Powers feedback, for example, will lead to all buyers getting better cars is my prediction.

Tesla makes great cars for sure, but lack of Carplay and poor delivery is what will have me never buying another. My wife is a different story, but she has me to deal with the delivery disaster and body work.
