Gulp... I guess this is really happening

So true. I have owned some very nice cars but this is the only one where I am happy to get a yellow light and stop knowing I will be first in line when the light turns green.
Yesterday it happened to me in a 50mph zone. I gunned it at Green as I started counting 'one hundred thousand one...'.
It took 5 seconds to 60. By that time the other cars were about 200 meters behind in my rearview mirror.
And all that happened without making a scene or obscene noise. :D

Congratulations! You're going to love it. I've been obsessing over it since a test drive in November, and finally got to the point in April where the economics were close enough to get out of my lease that I pulled the trigger.

Picked it up 2 weeks ago and hoped that would let me relax and stop obsessing..... nope. Hasn't happened yet.

I haven't been this excited to drive since I first got my license decades ago.

My 11yo son is almost as excited as I am... and he's already drooling at the possibility of this being his car in 6 years as a hand-me-down when I pick up a Model Y or ... whatever is current then.

So, congratulations, welcome aboard and just be aware -- you haven't scratched that itch. It doesn't get boring... at least it hasn't for me yet. I'm still totally enamored with this car!

(and ps - you sound like almost-my-twin. My wife has a Buick Enclave (much like your CX-9) and is intimidated by the Model 3's technology... but she sure likes the way it drives; the acceleration and handling and visibility are way better than she expected.)
Me too Murph. I’ve had my 3 for 2 months and I still can’t wait to drive it every day.

Update ... o_O

Well - last night, for some reason, I got a different VIN assigned to me on my account page. So, this morning I called the Mt. Kisco service center (where I had changed my delivery to on Monday), and the new VIN is for a car that has just been put on a truck at the factory, and so the earliest it would be delivered would likely be May 19th, not the 7th.

She's looking into why the VIN was switched (she shows the other car is currently near Chicago). Could be because (1) while I had selected Manhasset for delivery, when I got the delivery notice on the 4/27, it said home delivery, (2) I then contacted someone at Tesla who switched it to Manhasset (given many here said better to have delivery at a service location), (3) then got the vin (phone call), (4) And later that day, in a follow up call to Manhasset they said they switched me to Mt. Kisco, as it slightly closer to me.

She said she'd switch it back to the other VIN if it would ultimately be an earlier delivery and there was nothing "wrong" with the car (as a reason for the switch). So, of course, my mind is running wild with "maybe the other VIN/car has something wrong with it" ... and if I get it switched back blah blah blah.

I'm supposed to be hearing back this afternoon. I'm not going to hold my breath given the stories of return phone calls I often see on this forum.

Will keep y'all posted.

That new vin likely has a later manufacturing date, and with tesla's its usually better to get the "freshest" / newest car you can, unless there is a pressing need not to. If it were me, I would keep the vin they switched you to, IF they verify the "born on" date with you. Ask the "she" you are dealing with for the "born on" date for both cars, and target the newest one (thats my advice anyway).

Temper the desire to get it sooner, with the knowledge that you "should" have this car for many years so a couple more weeks on the front end is not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

Good point. I have no problem waiting - but I did check my account page moments ago and it was switched back to the original VIN - but I still want to know why it was switched in the first place. Could it be that I switched Service Center delivery locations a couple of days ago from Manhasset on Long Island, to Mt. Kisco - in the Hudson Valley? And that the truck bound from Mt. Kisco with a performance 3 on it was just due later than the one bound for Manhasset?

The VIN only switched by 57 numbers ... 237263 (orig), to 237320; so, if they are making now close to 8000 M3s each week, and so even if the car was produced earlier (e.g., 5000 per week), both cars were almost certainly made in the same week, if not the same day?

I’m coming out of a Mazda

@neroden ... lucky for me she actually doesn't want to touch it! She's definitely not a tech person - bad enough she has problems figuring out the electronics in her Cx-5 ... that said - she did enjoy the 0-60 runs we did in the test drive, as well as how quiet the car is. If somehow she get behind the wheel and starts to understand the interface, etc - I'm definitely in trouble!

Countdown begins ... 5 days!

@S4WRXTTCS - looking forward to all of it!

@hcdavis3 - this M3P is an upgrade from my 2010 Mazda CX-9 ... which we are holding onto for HomeDepot garden runs ;-)

Once "She" gets some time behind the wheel there's a decent risk she'll end up driving it most of the time. You may need to buy another one.

OK... Tesla explanation regarding the VIN change. When Manhasset noticed I lived in Westchester County, they suggested (after I called them for a VIN) I pick the car up in their Mt. Kisco location. I said great ... makes sense ... (even though Manhasset is in Long Island, it is literally the same distance as Mt. Kisco). When they did that, it unmatched me from the original VIN which was destined to Manhasset, to a new VIN of the same configuration destined to Mt. Kisco. But the new VIN was on a truck in california.

So, the DA at Mt. Kisco re-matched me to the original VIN (which had not be reassigned), but couldn't change the delivery - it was still going to Manhasset, but she said that the could "valet" it to Mt. Kisco in a day/two. "Valet"? I said if someone is driving it, or even they are not (i.e., loading it again onto a truck), I'd rather just pick it up in Manhasset (the car is actually due their today). So, they are changing the delivery back to Manhasset.

I'll now have to re-confirm with all parties (Mt. Kisco, Manhasset) just to be sure given the customer service issues noted by many on these forums.

So, looks like (fingers crossed) still on for Tuesday at 2 pm :)

You are going to drive yourself crazy trying to analyze this. Just let it happen. ;)

Have to say, I’m greatly enjoying following your anticipation saga. Can’t wait for the next chapter!

I love this thread. The OP sounds just like me! I pick up my M3 tomorrow in Charlotte. I also never thought I would spend this much $ on a car; heck, I didn't even think I would ever buy a brand-new car! I've owned only three cars in my life, and none were new or even close to the luxury category. I blame my brother (who's a Tesla geek) in addition to the test drive! Now I'm also obsessing over all the details, and wondering how much my wife is going to "borrow" the M3.

Good news for those who are worrying about the financial outlay, though. Elon apparently said yesterday that Teslas would be worth $150-250k in a few years. :D

Delivery set for next Tuesday afternoon! omg...omg...

I've never spent this much coin on a ride before EVER (since I bought my first new car), AND I take mass transit to work!!!! Not that I can't swing this (financially) but it goes my mindset regarding vehicles purchases for the past 10 years (not worth shelling out so much money for personal transportation, rapidly depreciating asset, better places to park my money... etc.).

But then I test drove the M3P on March 17th... and the joy of driving I had when I bought my '89 Mustang LX 5.0 returned, and so, I just couldn't help myself!

Still - a bit of me feels foolish for spending so much on something that I won't use often and knowing that - for the most part, people should spend $$ on experiences (i.e., travel), and not material items. But - in support of that logic - driving the M3P is quite an experience :)

And again, you only live once - and, it's time for it to be at least a little "about me", hence my screen-name ;-)

Be well my friends :)

Be sure to inspect the car VERY carefully before taking delivery. We noticed a scratch in the door jam - obviously an assembler's screwdriver slipped while installing the door closure hardware - a couple of weeks after taking delivery. The delivery specialist and Tesla store rep refused to repair it. Very disappointing!!

Elon - what a card.. such a comedian ... maybe he should go on late night and do stand-up ... :D

Congratulations!! A Tesla is definitely an experience not a car. Mine is 6 months old and it still makes me giddy. I've had great cars that I loved, but never a car that brought me such unfettered joy. Wishing you the same joy!
