@ddruz, Okay you've had your car a couple of weeks now. Time for new owner report, buddy. Can you give us some details or impressions please?
Been doing a
lot of driving and checking the forums very regularly but haven't had much worthwhile to contribute lately. Very excited for everyone nearing delivery! Since you asked for a report Akikiki, however, here are some details and impressions for what they are worth:
My favorite thing about the car is its quietness. Astounding! I actually
prefer driving with no music now.
I've driven a Leaf since Sep 2011 so am familiar with the smoothness of an EV, the instant torque and driving powered purely by the sun--PVs cover my roof. But the power of the Model S is beyond astonishing! And I have "only" a 60. Way plenty.
Seat memory function is also a favorite. I have never had this on a car before and find it extremely useful. Since this is now bundled with the Tech package and no longer with the leather seats it adds value to Tech for new buyers on the fence about buying it as I was. Still having some second thoughts about spending nearly $4K on the Tech package but it is growing on me.
I prefer low regen and creep. Since I always have charge to spare on the island I use them both. Gives the car a much smoother ride IMO. If I were watching my kWh, however, I'd turn them off.
Have had a dickens of a time finding a comfortable setting for the seat/steering wheel position. The seat comfort is my least favorite thing about the car. To be very honest, Model S driver's seat comfort, despite the gigantic number of settings to choose from, is not in the same league as the rest of the car IMO. I hate to say that but it is the truth at least for my body. Rear seat comfort is AOK though with the pano roof. I would most definitely go with textile if I had to do it over again since I'm fine with piano black decor.
Windshield wipers don't go fast enough at max IMO and the auto settings are easily fooled. The wipers are the only other thing I've found that I consider not in the league with the rest of the car.
The Sound Studio was a gift from my family and is very fun. Wouldn't have bought it myself. I have a decent ear and this is a good system. I do not agree with the naysayers. But IMO it is quite sensitive to the settings and the source material. I do not like Dolby for lossy media such as Slacker or anything streamed via Bluetooth. I do strongly prefer Dolby for lossless media such as FLAC via USB thumb drive, however. The Dolby creates a subtle spaciousness and brings out buried fundamental bass frequencies with lossless media but with lossy media it degrades the sound. I postulate that the Dolby cannot properly do its job with a truncated, compressed source that is already designed to trick the human ear but works beautifully with pristine source material. My preferred settings are fade -7, balance 0, bass + 10, mid 0, treble +2. When switching to Dolby for FLAC I turn the volume up a couple notches to compensate.
Had my car 5-year Glared at 20/20 Auto Detailing last week. Awesome job. Hoping this protects against UV degradation for a number of years.
Debated extensively what to do with my front license plate. Concluded that it sets a very bad example for EVs and Tesla drivers in particular to try to skate without a front plate and pay the ticket if caught. Had my plate mounted low with zip ties for the first couple weeks to try it out. But my personal aesthetic preference is mounted as Tesla recommends attached to the nosecone. However, I feel a black frame helps tie together a plate mounted there with the nosecone. So that's what I did. This is clearly a personal preference decision and don't see how anyone can go wrong wherever they mount their front plate. Too bad Hawaii is a state where the law requires a front plate.
Got the Lloyd's Ultimate black carpets for front and rear and believe it was money well spent. They are clearly a notch above the new Tesla carpet. Very elegant in appearance. Classes up an already classy interior for a modest cost.
I thought I would greatly dislike the cup holders in the arm rests but to my happy surprise they work just fine for me. I have no trouble reaching my water bottle which fits perfectly. The arm rest is too high for my arm anyway so I don't miss it a bit when the cup holder is in use.
I mounted an inexpensive, dual cup holder to the rear seat carpet in such a way that neither the middle seat nor its legroom are lost. Haven't seen this exact solution posted anywhere before. It's a bit out of the box thinking but very practical and decent looking IMO. Glad to post details if anyone is interested.
I wish the car came with closed storage under the arm rests because I would prefer more closed storage but like the open space console as is. If the cost of the forthcoming center console is too high I'll likely to pass on it, however, whereas prior to receiving the car I felt it would be a must have.
I built a very nice looking, practical parcel shelf from materials from Home Depot and Walmart for under $60 with tax based on suggestions and measurements earlier in this thread by dsmith (mahalo!). With the hatch closed it looks completely OEM.
Have washed my car with the two bucket method and microfiber mitt and cloths several times. Much easier than anticipated. I bought some RainX at Walmart and did my windows. Works great.
Glad I went with Silver even though I like white a little better. It really does hide the Hawaiian dirt awesomely well which was my rationale for it.
Been flashed a couple times at night so will have my headlight height checked when I go in to the SC sometime. Could be they are just right but oncoming traffic is not used to xenons.
Summary: I love this car! I have no regrets buying it whatsoever despite it costing almost twice what I ever paid before for a car. I do have buyer's remorse over the air suspension which I only got because they said my car would be delivered about two months sooner with it in time for an important family function. Turns out that standard suspension would have arrived just as soon in my case since I made some other late changes. All in all I am super happy with this car and very proud to be part of something that will change the world.
There you have it Akikiki. Hopefully this was what you were looking for. Happy driving everyone!
