Here is the rear of a $400,000 Rolls Royce Ghost. I'm not sure that they would not need neck pillows also.

I might be mistaken, but aren’t those headrests in the Ghost adjustable in height?

Here’s the rear of a Volvo S80 starting at MSRP $40,500. It was introduced in June 2007.

Sounds like a test drive might have helped?

In fairness to the original poster, many people don't test drive cars with adult passengers in the back (I test drove the MS with two of my kids, who are 8 and 11, so the rear headrests weren't a problem). Though the rear headrests look kinda short, one doesn't realize how short they are until they are in use by adults. I haven't had any complaints about them because I haven't yet driven an adult back there. But I can absolutely see that their height could be a safety issue and probably should have been designed to be minimal AND taller (perhaps a folding feature?).
