I had the Homelink added, 'cause I couldn't order my M3 that way... I found the Tesla implementation of Homelink to be inferior to my other Homelink equipped cars, range wise. It really kinda "sucks" (range wise) - probably because it's down low and hidden behind the front bumper! Other implementations are located in the rear view mirror. For our gate, I now have to get within 30' of it before the weak signal can reach the gate - so now I have to stop, and wait for the damn gate to open. Never a problem with any other Homelink installations we have (Our Subaru has the best range, BTW).... by the time we come up on the gate in our other cars, the gate is already open. No stopping and waiting. I found myself now using the tiny gate fob to open the gate (when in the M3)... Pretty lame. :(

All who have the Homelink in their Tesla: How's the range for you (M3 Owners)? Perhaps a just got a crappy Homelink unit (or the SC installed backwards - perhaps I should try it while backing up to the gate!), along with my SC-led installation paint damage?

I'm with you. With my clicker remote, and the Homelink in my wife's Highlander, I can click at the top of my steep driveway and the door is open by the time I get down the hill. With the Tesla module, I have to wait until I'm 30ft. I assumed the same as you that it has to do with how low it is. It must work for some though because they do allow the distance to be set to 70'.

My car (build date: mid may) LR AWD is also missing homelink. I always thought the cut off date was end may.
If your car was ordered before the end of may. You can ask your delivery specialist to do a request to add him. If you have right on the HomeLink module normally there is no problem. Once you receive an answer, they will ask to book an appointment to add the HL-module.

That's a shame home link isn't included by default anymore, I'm sure lots of people are in the same situation as me and didn't even know their garage door opener supported homelink when getting their Tesla, then were pleasantly surprised when their car gained the (previously unknown) feature to automatically open the garage door!

I wonder how many will miss out on this experience, even if they would be willing to pay the $300 if they knew they could use it?

To clarify my situation a bit, we never used our old car in the garage, but wanted to charge the Tesla in the garage. We expected to buy a new garage door opening system (we didn't even know our current system was wireless), but were pleased to discover the tesla could automatically open our current system, no upgrades necessary!

Can you explain? I've been thinking about getting Homelink for my yet to be delivered Tesla but I have brand new wireless connected door openers. If I don't need Homelink that'd be awesome.

I'll take a stab at it but take my stab with a grain of salt, I don't even have my VIN yet LOL.

From talking to my sister, Homelink will use the GPS and open your garage door as you drive up to it (and close it as you drive away). It's a convenience thing.

My plan is to drive the car for awhile and then figure out if I'm missing a feature like this or not.... I don't think it would work for me as I already use my phone to disarm the alarm system as I drive up and then use the same app to open the garage door, but YMMV.

Feel free to correct my limited knowledge on the issue LOL.

Sorry for the confusion, my car did have homelink, and we didn't know that our garage door opener supported homelink (we were expecting to need to upgrade our system, and even then need to use a separate, dedicated remote), but when having an unrelated repair on it done realized it did support homelink, so our car effectively (from our perspective) got a new fancy feature, that we didn't even know existed when we got it.

So my concern is for others who might not know about or use homelink currently, and thus wouldn't know to ask for it, but would greatly appreciate it's existence if it did come standard with the car.

Mostly off topic, but has anyone else recently had homelink stop working since the recent update (2019.32)? When I got home today it wouldn't open the garage door, even with repeated manual presses, and a couple reboots. I'm not sure if it's something failing with the car, or with the garage door opener.

What’s the best way to get homelink added for delivery? I’ve ordered my M3 but don’t have a vin or pickup date yet. Is it something I can just ask them to install when I’m there for pickup or is there someway to get it added before?

Unfortunately no, I’ve been through this with Tesla. I bought and had installed in my M3 the Homelink after I realized (to my shock) that it wasn’t included. When I ordered my wife’s M3 Performance FSD white/white on 8/6 (no VIN yet, like everyone else...) I asked about ordering the Homelink so that they could install before delivery and save the extra service center visit (although it can be done as a mobile service). Apparently the install ties the VIN to the Homelink license or something like that and it “cannot be done” before delivery. In fact, you can’t even order it online until you have the VIN because the ordering process requires you to enter your VIN.

Another example of how Tesla could up their game and simply add it as an option box when ordering. I would have gladly paid MORE than $300 to be be able to have it installed prior to delivery. But like any manufacturing company, growing while not screwing up what made you successful is the hardest thing to execute. Many fail at this; hopefully (for all of us) Tesla can withstand the growing pains and stay at the pointy end of the EV manufacturers.
