HPWC vs. NEMA 14-50

I replied yesterday but for some reason it did not post.

I would like to thank you efusco for posting such detailed photos of your installation, that is exactly what I was looking for and way more than I expected. I have heard the charge cord gets warm if it stays coiled up, do you find you have to un coil the whole thing or just what you need to reach the car?

Thanks again
Duc

Is the HPWC a tax deductible accessory? Seems so form the tesl website, but they link to an article talking about non-electric distribution equipment - http://shop.teslamotors.com/products/high-power-wall-connector. At the bottom of the page they say, The US government offers a federal tax credit equal to 30% of the cost of any qualified alternative fuel vehicle refueling property (up to $1,000 for personal use and $30,000 for business use). This credit is scheduled to expire December 31, 2013.Please contact your personal tax or financial advisor for additional detail. http://www.irs.gov/irb/2007-22IRB/ ar10.html,

Thanks!

I'm aware of AMT limitations on claijming this deduction. But would the cost of installing a NEMA 14-50 in my garage qualify, or does it need to be something like an actual charging station like a Clipper Creek or HPWC to qualify?

Yes, EVSEs (like the HPWC) are eligible for a 30% tax credit (subject to limits, AMT, etc).

This tax credit was enabled years ago...and expired just as EVs started getting shipped. Plug In America managed to get it reinstated retroactively a year ago, but it's going to expire again in about a month. With the current mood in congress, chances of it getting reinstated soon are slim. If you are thinking of installing one, getting it done in the next month would be a good idea.
