If Tesla's successful in making their Autopilot system autonomous, they aren't going to care if they need to retrofit, because the increase in revenue will more than cover the retrofits.

Yeah. Elon has always been about charity. Remember, service centers are not a profit center? That was a good one. Tesla has the highest routine maintenance costs of any car I've ever owned including Jaguar, Mercedes, and a half dozen Cadillacs.

They’ll be fine. I’m guessing the vast majority of customers haven’t opted for FSD, so the only retrofits/replacements/refunds Tesla would have to offer would be to those. The others Tesla could just raise the price of FSD to cover their costs. But it certainly wouldn’t be great from a PR perspective.
Customers who bought the car thinking they could one day activate Full Self Driving at an advertised price, will be sent a postcard from Tesla with a picture of Elon holding a fishing rod & pissing himself laughing...

Tesla has developed a sensor pack that should be capable of FSD. They may be right or wrong on that, but their intention and plan is to develop that system to enable the cars to drive themselves.

Of coulrs it will take a while, but the vehicles have been getting better and better at it with each OTA update.

No system will ever eliminate 100% of all incidences. The goal is for it to get much better than the carnage currently done with human drivers. Automatious driveing will be considered a success when it becomes safer than people driving. It will never be fail safe. Every mode of transportation experiences incidences...even esclators.

Service centers are a cost center (delivery and warranty repair) so it's easy to say that they won't be a profit center.
 
I know. I was on one at the department store the other day & it suddenly veered off to the left & I landed in a women’s clothing store in the next city.

You obviously didn't get the proper training on use of the escalator. You know the part about keeping one hand on the handrail. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? In the 1960's, a local department store in Alabama had two employees whose full-time job was to teach customers how to ride the escalator. Perhaps Tesla should consider hiring some of those folks. It says a lot about Alabama's dedication to continuing education when you recall that the U.S.S. Yorktown aircraft carrier had an escalator during World War II, more than 20 years earlier. Just guessing that none of the sailors and airmen got much training on how to use it.

I heard Alabama already have cars with their version of autopilot.

Very interesting! My dad must have used that escalator on CV-10 Yorktown when he was flying a Corsair fighter off of it in 1945. Wish I could ask him as he passed away at 98, 2 years ago. He also watched the CV-10's predecessor, CV-5 Yorktown, sink in the Battle of Midway in 1942 (he was on the Enterprise, CV-6). One of his good friends was on CV-5 and jumped into the ocean, fortunately surviving.

After WWII they had to upfit the WWII carriers for the new heavy jets. Since the pilot's quarters were now further below the flight deck, they put in escalators for the pilots.

Tesla Enhanced Autopilot is really not much different from the system that is now offered by Volvo in some models, and is called Pilot Assist. Here is a description from Volvo:

"Note: Pilot Assist is designed to be a supplementary driving aid and cannot cover all driving situations, traffic, weather and/or road conditions. Pilot Assist is not intended to replace the driver's attention and judgment. Pilot Assist must only be used where there are clearly visible traffic lane side marker lines on both sides of the current traffic lane. In other circumstances there is an increased risk of collision with surrounding obstacles that are not detected by the system. The driver is always responsible for steering the vehicle and maintaining a suitable speed and distance to the vehicle ahead and must intervene if necessary, even if Pilot Assist is being used.

Pilot Assist does not react to people or animals, or small vehicles such as bicycles and motorcycles. It also does not react to low trailers, slow moving, parked or approaching vehicles, or stationary objects. Do not use Pilot Assist in demanding driving conditions such as city driving or other heavy traffic situations, in slippery conditions, when there is a great deal of water or slush on the road, during heavy rain or snow, in poor visibility, on winding roads or on highway ramps."

Some people have used similar defeat methods (like an orange) in Volvos to avoid keeping hands on the steering wheel.
