Just bought a New 2018 LR RWD from Tesla

Not trying to not pick or take away from the car but I wouldn’t have purchased it. It’s a 2 year old car. I would have gone for the 2020 dual motor for a little more money.

I see. For me, it's still the same car that you get now and I don't really have use for a dual motor in California. I was originally going to get an SR+ since it will be mainly for my wife's daily commute but for $5k more, I'm taking a chance on this one.

Not sure how $45,430 is 2020 price especially considering I can't get an LR RWD Model 3 today? Curious, how much would you have paid for this car?

I think a lot depends on how you value the red paint upgrade. If you wanted a red car and would be willing to pay an extra $2,000 on a new car to get the red paint then it becomes a nice deal. If you really wanted a white car but settled for red then it’s a little less enticing, since most of the $2,470 discount was absorbed by the $2,000 red paint upgrade.

We have two LR RWD cars and love them. I chose not to get the AWD because in California it doesn’t help much to have the extra traction.

I still find it odd that the car was sitting for so long though. Did Tesla ever explain what it’s been doing for the past year?

My wife loves the red but wouldn't really want to pay for it. This would be the best compromise as we basically get the color for free plus a few hundred more discount.

As for the explanation, no they haven't. No one can tell me anything about the car...nor where it is as of right now. I was supposed to take delivery today after I talked to the delivery specialist on Thursday. Yesterday evening, my account shows that delivery is now happening tentatively on Monday. I called several times today and no one can tell me where the car is nor can anyone confirm delivery. The delivery center I'm supposed to pick up from is about 20 miles from Fremont where the car was originally located.

I really wanted dual-motor Performance. I wanted it bad. But I didn't want to wait and my best guess at the time was that I'd have had to wait an additional year. Literally two weeks after placing my order and committing to it, I began thinking that I might want to move to Maui. Dual-motor and Performance would just be nonsensical here. OTOH, LR is way overkill here. I also didn't want to pay for the upgraded interior, and I love it.

So I got the LR which I have no need of.
I had to get the PUP which I didn't want and I love.
And I was unable to get DM-P which I wanted but would be useless here.
Oh, and I got EAP which I love, though I think basic AP would have been fine, but was not an option.

If I were to buy a 2018 new today, I would need Tesla to reduce the vehicle price by the federal rebate that was available at the time the car was manufactured. I bought my M3 in Nov 2018 so I could cash in on the fed tax credit.
Erm...Go see how much a new 3LR with AP, Premium Interior was in the “good ol’ days” of 2018.

Keep in mind also that you really had to have a decent amount of tax liability in order to even take advantage of the credit. That being said for 117 miles on the car the adjustment is pretty decent. It took nearly 7K demo miles for my car to get an $11K adjustment so $2,400 is a good trade for an arguably *new* car.

There was a member who posted here recently about a similar vehicle scenario. When they investigated it further they discovered the car had been in an accident and Tesla had done $4,000 worth of repairs on the car without disclosing it.

If it were me, I would not take delivery of the car until Tesla explains what the car’s history was. At a minimum ask to see the service records on the car. Also keep in mind that it is rumored that the LR RWD model is coming back this Spring. Although it is just a rumor so who knows if it will really happen.

Thanks, will definitely ask more questions regarding the car and inspect it carefully if it ever arrives. I considered waiting for the return of the LR RWD but since it's not official yet, didn't want to let this go. Worst case, I let this one go and just wait again with minimal losses.

By the way, mind sharing that thread regarding the accident?

Just an update.

I received a call yesterday at 12 noon from Delivery that the car arrived at the Dublin Service center and could be picked up end of day. I grab the last spot for delivery which was 6pm. I then get a call just when I was about to head out of the office that inspections weren't finished and that it will take them one more day before I can take delivery. Since I won't be able to pick up today, I scheduled delivery for Wednesday.

Today, as I was checking my online account, I noticed that the VIN number was gone. I give the service center a call and was told they will look into it. A few hours pass and I called again, I was then told that there was a mix up with logistics and that the car was a return from 2018, and as such, they can't sell it as a brand new car.

My wife and I are pretty disappointed with this experience since this was going to be her commute car to replace her current i3 but maybe it's also better as I feel like I've dodged a bullet.

I’m guessing you are not completely surprised by this? We knew there was a story behind that car. You don’t just have a two year old car with less than 200 miles sitting around and then just suddenly decide to put it up for sale one day. They usually send their returns to auction so they may not be planning on selling the car to a retail buyer at this point.

I actually am pretty surprised to be honest. It's not like there is a way to identify an individual vehicle and be able to check if a car is supposed to be titled or not...it also is surprising that it came up to this point meaning there aren't any checks or gates or validations they put in.

EDIT: thinking about it, it's somewhat of a relief for me that the "story" showed itself before I took delivery of the car. If this wasn't the story and I took delivery of the car, it would probably linger in the back of my mind and make theories on what the "story" was really regarding this car.

This is not the first time Tesla has done this, as you have seen from those other posts we found. They get very confused when someone returns a car and frequently return it to inventory as a new car only to discover after they offer it to someone that they can’t sell it as new. But there was clearly more to the story with this one given that it was a 2018. Requesting service records and a Carfax report might have uncovered some things. Who knows. I think you did dodge a bullet here.

If you can get the $2K CA rebate I’d go for the LR AWD. Or if you are not in a hurry, see if Tesla brings back the LR RWD model in a few months. I think they will, but I have no clue when. One employee who posts on the forum said Spring.
