Seriously though, what the hell is this?

Sharks and laser beams, duh.

I think it's an expensive looking sports car, but not for me. Plus, "Do you want to ride my Yang Wang?" has a *very* different connotation in some parts of the world.

Happy SIX YEAR Elonversary to this Earnings Call.

Russell: I’m not an expert in battery pack technology, but it seems that a lot of people are speculating that the specs for the Semi truck, even I believe the CEO of Daimler said it breaks the laws of physics. So, I’m wondering is this just a linear...

Musk: He doesn’t know much about physics. I know him. I’d be happy to engage in a physics discussion with him. I actually studied physics in college.

Russell: So, yeah, my question is that just a linear improvement in your battery technology? Or is there some sort of new breakthrough or different platform that the Semi and Roadster are going to be built on?

Musk: I mean, even if we didn’t improve our battery technology at all, we could achieve a 500 mile range truck at all. We’re going to do better than 500 miles.

Also applies to the Semi as well.

Elon's nothing if not overly optimistic when it comes to the results of a back-of-the-envelope "first principles" physics estimation of how well a thing will turn out.
Let's not forget the solar roof claims! It was going to be CHEAPER than installing a new normal asphalt roof. That was the initial claim. Then he back-pedaled and said cheaper when you consider the cost of electricity it saves you. Then he said cheaper than a new normal roof, with solar panels installed, and considering the cost of electricity it makes for you. Even compared to that, it's still not there, not even at parity, let alone cheaper.
I interviewed for a position with the solar tile team in 2017, when it was based in Marin County, CA. Great group of engineers; I think none of them work on the project any more. Even they were hedging, even back then, on how likely / soon the cost would be competitive.

Not as I recall it. As I recall it, Elon claimed new roof of solar tiles would be cheaper than a new asphalt roof + new solar panels. Even that didn't work out, at which point he added "+ avoided cost of electricity" to try and make the statement vaguely true, and finally added + "similar premium roof" by which he meant slate.
