M3 Tire Sidewall

Hi Folks,

Picked up a used set of wheels and tires (moving to 19s from 20s on the M3P). Noticed one of the tires has a weird ring depression on the side wall which is right around the outside of the tire (see pic) like something was sitting on it.

Question: Has anyone seen this before? Any concerns with sidewall weakening or OK to leave it?

Appreciate any input.

That tire is jacked. That’s a lot of missing sidewall rubber.

To me, it looks like a gouge mark. Something that came into contact with the tire when it was spinning. Enough to take off some of the rubber. Can't say if it was when the tire was on the car or off (like during a dynamic balancing operation).

Kids intentionally do that to their tires for some reason. Must be a video game reference or something.

Might've been installed in a car that was super lowered and was rubbing on the fenders. Don't think it was ran flat without air, the gouge pattern is too regular for that.

replace ? going to take it to a tire shop tomorrow but none are open on sunday so wanted to ask this community.

That’s what happens to a tire after it’s driven without air pressure. It’s very obvious if you’ve seen it before. Basically, the wheel rim is riding on that spot on the sidewall wearing it down. That tire was probably driven for a few miles without pressure.

I would plan to replace it because the internal sidewall structure will be damaged, independent of how much rubber is missing. And you’ll probably want to replace the other tire on that axle, unless it’s relatively new with little tread wear.

@Dispersion Does the inner side of the tire also have the same gouge? If so, then it was run flat. If not, then something rubbed on the outer side (fender, etc.). Either way, if it were me, I'd replace it.

That tire was definitely driven on while flat. It is garbage and unsafe to drive on. There will be all kinds of rubber particles inside the tire when they dismount it from the wheel where the inside part of the sidewall disintegrated as it was driven on. That junk might damage your TPMS sensor over time too.

With the weight of cars today, it doesn't take much time running at extremely low or zero pressure to destroy a tire.
