Model 3 reservation confusion at various Tesla stores

In California you can gift a vehicle to anyone. According to the DMV web site "The lone difference being you may need to provide smog certification". Just get that TM3 smogged and you're good to go .

DMV.org is a private company, not a state-run site. I'd never take their word as gospel.

Although it is nothing definitive, posts over the last couple of years indicate that Tesla is willing to allow a reservation transfer between immediate family members. Their main goal is to avoid a secondary market selling reservations.

Not to pile on with regard to the risk of an after-the-delivery but before-the-registration ownership transfer process, but Tesla has been known to take a hard line with their interpretation of "original owner". As in recently, a fellow who showed up as the 2nd owner was denied the opportunity to give Tesla $4,000.00 for an ESA for miles 50,001-100,000.

It is unconfirmed as to whether the fellow, once denied, ended up selling the car instead of putting up with that silliness.

You are correct and I salute your caution. But as I read it the DMV site says pretty much the same thing, in its own dialect of bureaucratese.

Yes - definitely taking a risk without written permission. My entire encyclopedia of knowledge on this stems from a call to Tesla headquarters in California 48 hours ago, on which I was told in regards to transferring reservations (paraphrased)

"Once the reservation holder takes delivery, you can do whatever you want - we don't care".

Now, whatever that means....
