Model S rally

Hi all,

Just want to keep the momentum going on organizing the rally:

1. Date: Shall we confirm for December 14th? I'm okay with that or November 30th but I note from the delivery thread that there are a few forum regulars getting their cars in November so the December date would allow for them.

2. Route stops: Any Jockey Club member on this forum who can help us enquire about a Beas River stop?

Mark - any other next steps? How is "enrollment" coming along?

Thanks!

The discussions and arrangements for this have moved to the WhatsApp group (to keep things more flexible and faster response). Summaries will be posted here. So far:

Date: Sunday 14th December 2014, starting around 9am and finishing around 4pm.

Route:
  • Assembly at Kai Tak (those in need of a top-up use the SuperChargers there)
  • Eastern tunnel
  • Cross to south of the island (hopefully avoiding the narrow Tai Tam Reservoir Road)
  • Past Aberdeen
  • Cyberport for a rest break and social gathering
  • Western tunnel
  • Airport drive-by
  • Marriott for lunch (still to be confirmed, pending pricing and arrangements)
  • Tsing Long Highway north
  • Lok Ma Chau
  • Sheung Shui
  • Fanlin Highway east
  • Tolo Highway
  • Science Park for a rest break and social gathering
  • Ma On Shan bypass
  • Sai Kung
  • Hirams Highway
  • Clearwater Bay
  • Ending at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club for tea

Range: Expecting approximately 200km route

Price: tba, but sufficient to cover the event lunch and tea (not including tunnel fees and electrons)

Open: To all Tesla vehicles, passengers welcome

Limit: 10 to 20 cars, up to 24 total participants

Thanks again, Mark. The route you outlined has been mapped here: Hong Kong, Kai Tak Cruise Terminal to Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club Marina - Google Maps (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)
Should only be 161km, which is good, because I need to add another 35km or so to get to and from Kai Tak and I drive a 60kWh without Supercharging capabilities!

Wow, I like that. Nice route. It is a shame about Tai Tam - we'll have to discuss as a group how brave we feel about that.

The discussions and arrangements for this have moved to the WhatsApp group (to keep things more flexible and faster response). Summaries will be posted here. So far, we have around 15 cars who have requested to join, but we expect that to change +/- over the coming few weeks.

Everything is now confirmed, and we are just letting things settle down until we get closer to the date. We expect to send out formal invites to all those that have pre-registered (first come, first served) and confirm all registrations by mid-November (1 month before the event).

Sounds all good!

Being the uncurable Teslavocate I am, I am thinking if we could get one or more volunteers to make some videos, for instance from drive-by's? I can mount a GoPro on my car to make some videos from the car, though a final edit would be much better with video of the convoy at key points. Alternatively, one car could volunteer to be ahead of the pack at certain times, enough to set up and make a video, then catch up and join the end of the line.

Confirmation, pricing and arrangements

Date: Sunday 14th December 2014, starting around 9am and finishing around 4pm.

Summary: Back in 2011, a group of Tesla Roadster owners drove around Hong Kong. We had fun, got comfortable with the range of our cars, and introduced both the brand and our cars to a whole bunch of Hong Kong people along the way. My favourite comment from the 2011 event was: "You make owning a Tesla fun!". Now that Model S has arrived in Hong Kong, thanks to AppleFan's urging, we've decided to do it again. Who knows - perhaps it might even become an annual event.

You can read more about the original rally here: Circling Hong Kong on one charge

Regards, Mark.

eMail confirmations have just gone out to everyone who I have as signed up already. If you haven't received your confirmation, but were expecting to have been signed-up, please let me know.

Total so far is 10 cars and 27 people (finishing with 22 for tea at the club).

There are a couple of people, still waiting for their cars from Tesla, who can't confirm yet.

So, there is still some room, if anyone else wants to join up. First come first served. You are also most welcome if you want to join us for just part of the drive, or at one of the stops - either to show your support or just have fun meeting fellow Tesla enthusiasts. Let me know.

One other piece of good news, that Edwin hinted at earlier, is that we've received an offer of sponsorship. No strings attached. Up to HK$2,500 for the Sharks, and HK$2,500 for a lucky draw. Now, that is something worth getting up early on a Sunday morning for!

Regards, Mark

Total so far is 12 cars and 29 people (finishing with 23 for tea at the club). Pretty much at our limit for the event - if you still want to join, let me know and I'll see if you can be squeezed in.

As users of the whatsapp group have probably read, I lost my GoPro camera (and suction cup mount, waterproof case, mounting joint), to the western Tsing Yi expressway somewhere. So I am one camera down for the rally, now only Iphone camera and dSLR.

Craters. Despite it being able to hold its mount to over 250 km/h I still wanted to take it off again, after recording at the Kowloon Station car park, but couldn't find a place to stop. So I thought I would just have to leave it until I got home. I could see it in the left mirror until ... at some stage almost leaving Tsing Yi (before the tunnel), I couldn't see it any more.

OK. All the reservations are locked in and the event is full. Total is 15 cars and 43 people (although some are only for part of the rally).

Anyone not yet confirmed, you are also most welcome if you want to join us for just part of the drive, or at one of the stops - either to show your support or just have fun meeting fellow Tesla enthusiasts. But, the lunch and tea arrangements are full. Let me know.

Question, because I live on the Hong Kong side near East Tunnel, and you guys are driving towards my side anyway, can I join in when you guys are near?

Is there a plan for when we expect to be where?

There are people who want to see us, or meet up, along the way. I wish there could be some kind of "live update page" we could refer to, where our current position and other updates could be posted. Like when do we expect to be at Marriott? Etc

I also suggest we set up some kind of Flickr page for this. There can be a email address where one can email pictures to - and they automatically upload right away. This way, all members could email pictures to this email address during the day, and it would be a mix of so many different camera angles.

OK, here we go.

Volunteering participants of the rally will be uploading pictures during the day, which will show here:

or

You can also type http:// tinyurl com / tmchkpics (no spaces, I had to insert them in order for the forums NOT to code it to the name of the target URL).

For those who participate, upload details are in the Whatsapp group, or ask me in a PM.

R-2, and things are getting exciting.

The participant information pack is up, with all the gory/juicy details:

The route is confirmed:

We've got a nice mix of highway, country roads, and country park. Should be a fun day out, with the weather forecast looking good.

This year, the proceeds will go to the Hong Kong Shark Foundation (hksharkfoundation.org). As many as 73 million sharks are harvested each year for their fins, and more than half of these fins are traded in or through Hong Kong. Leilani Münter (carbonfreegirl.com) kindly wrote us some words to kick-off the event:

I was thrilled to hear that my fellow Tesla owners in Hong Kong are raising awareness about the terrible practice of shark finning. As a long time scuba diver, I have encountered many sharks in the wild and they are incredibly beautiful creatures. They have roamed the deep unchanged for hundreds of millions of years since before the dinosaurs. The balance of the ocean ecosystem depends on animals from the smallest microbe to the top predator and humans have already killed off 90% of the shark population, largely due to shark fin soup. Humans depend on the health of the ocean, if the oceans die, we die. This horrible practice must end, for their sake - and for ours.

So, let’s have a great day. Let’s learn about our cars, experience the roads of Hong Kong. Oh, and please remember that it is a rally, not a race! Above all, have fun and drive safely.

Wow!!! Mark, you got Leilani to write to us? How cool is that? Is that on Twitter? I gotta reply to her!
