MY Delivery Checklist - I need a little help

Hi all,

Excuse my ignorance - I've never bought a car in the US (I married an American and moved here). And buying a car online creates further questions. Getting insurance seems simple but what about registration and getting the number plates? Can you please make suggestion to my checklist below?

Finalize insurance - but can you do this without a VN? When do we get the VN?
Registration - I have no idea how this is done. How do I get the number plates? I live in Brooklyn, NY.
Take delivery

Again - sorry for my lack on knowledge. I appreciate your help.

I'm a NY insurance agent so i can answer a couple of the questions. In NY you need to have your VIN first. the next step is insurance. easiest way is to add it to your current policy to start with, or do a little shopping if you have no other car insured. You give them the info and they give you an insurance card.

This is where i'm not sure what Tesla does. but at a more traditional dealer, you give them your insurance card and they give you plates (they are authorized by DMV to issue plates) and a temporary registration, and the dept of motor vehicles sends you the regular registration in a few weeks. Maybe someone who has bought a previous tesla can comment on that.

and i beleive you get the VIN when you get the more formal delivery letter. folks were saying yesterday that it was in the email.

Great questions.
Most Registrations are done through Tesla. When you receive your delivery, there should be temporary paper tag on the vehicle. The process of you receiving your permanent tag is approx 30 days with most vehicles however Tesla has known to be longer. Most times they have the next month on the back of the temp paper tag.

Here was the checklist I used:
It was easy to tick things off w a pencil
Copy of Model 3 Checklist
One thing / warning to first Tesla owners: don’t let the checklist detract/dilute your delivery experience. Whether in an end of quarter rush or alone in the showroom, it is a unique experience (and I generally don’t care about these things).

Try to enjoy it and take it in... and then apologize to the delivery specialist (“sorry, I’m one of those”) and go through the list.

agreed. too much checklist is like trying to take too many photos on vacation. you miss the actual experience.

Fair but I go with the notion of not wanting to feel any remorse after getting home and finding out that they painted my car blue instead of red. I did just drop like 80K on this vehicle. I rather enjoy it afterwards and be more diligent about discussing and fixing any concerns while I have an adviser in front of me.

Let's be honest, if you're on this forum you'll already be smarter about the bits and bobs of the vehicle than the delivery advisor. And second, if you aren't diligent about your delivery, and miss something we're not going to hear the end of it here . Better find the problem and try to fix it with someone who can actually do something about it on the spot.

I say take a photo of yourself at the pick up location when you're first waiting, focus on the delivery, and enjoy the experience while driving it home in awe and wonder.

oh believe me i was not saying don't use the checklist. one time i picked up a custom van. the dealer had us pick it up at night. turns out the lower part of one side had been repainted in the wrong color, and we didn't notice until we walked up to it in full sunlight in a parking lot.

Stupid foreigners! :D It varies by state, so listen to the New Yorkers! Lived in Ithaca back in the 70s... In Oklahoma they just changed the law, so I'll put on the license plate from the car I'm selling.

I just got a text from Tesla! But it just said to go to my account page and do what I've already done. I DID text them back, asking how to get the VIN (not VN, at least that's what I've heard. ;)).

Also waiting for Wall Charger with 18' cord availability.
