My Model S 85D Story. Ordering to Delivery!

Ended up with a Midnight Silver 2016.5 (refreshed) Model S, P90DL that was loaded out including 3rd row/rear facing seats, which my 2 boys will love. Very excited! Been in love the Model S since 2012!

Congrats on your purchase!

I can definitely attest as to how great the 3rd row seats are with kids. I have three kids (14, 12, and 8) and even though I primarily envisioned the 8 year old sitting back there, all three fight over who gets to sit in the back - and yes my 14 year old who is 5'3" doesn't mind sitting back there at all.

How did you get the rear-facing seats on a 2019? I thought that option disappeared.

My kids (3 and 5 years) love the rear-facing seats. They won’t sit in their car seats in the back seat anymore and only the RFS are good enough for them. It’s been a great option to have.

No one quite knows :)

After my 2015 was totaled in May (one month into ownership - ugh...), I set out to find another one with rear facing seats but the used inventory completely dried up. On a whim I looked for new inventory and this car showed up. I was skeptical about the rear facing seats even though the car was showing the option so I went to my local Tesla gallery (no service centers in my state) and they confirmed that the car did indeed have them.

They couldn't tell my how or why as the option was removed in 2018. They thought it may have been a special in-person/off-menu order that was cancelled before delivery based on the fact that the car was being used as a demo vehicle prior to my purchase.

In any event, I am not complaining.

That’s awesome. RFS were a must for me and they’ve been totally worth it. Prior to 2018, it looks like only about 1 in 10 came with them, so finding a used MS with RFS was a little tricky (got mine before the inventory dried up, when there were still > 1200 MS listed on EV-CPO). I heard that the RFS continued to be available as an “off-menu” item for several months after they were discontinued. I would speculate that your inventory car started life as one such custom order that fell through for some reason or other. Great luck!

Edit: Jumped the gun and didn’t read through your post all the way. You said the same thing I did

I'm not sure if this was discussed or not but I haven't noticed anything about it.

Did you have any problems with the sales tax? I read around here someone complaining that when picking up an S in San Diego they made him pay CA sales tax ?!.

Did you have to just pay the used S price + doc fee and they gave you temp tags? Then you came home to Dallas and registered it yourself and paid the sales tax here?

I had already posted about sales tax in this thread, read from the beginning. In any case,
I picked up my 2015 Model S85D in San Diego. California requires sales tax is paid and Tesla will collect that from you at delivery. Tesla San Diego provided a temporary 3 day permit to drive the car out of California.

I worked with the Plano Tesla Center and they provided me temporary tags. Tesla registered the car in Texas and sent the title to my financial institution. The tags took about 2 months, they came via FedEx.

Since I paid sales tax in California, you can get proof of payment from California, the state of Texas waives the Texas sales tax. I saved $2,000 by picking the car in California, but CA sales tax is 1% more than TX.

Hope this helps.

Also note that not all states have reciprocity with CA so you may end up paying sales tax twice. Others have said that Tesla will ship the car to Las Vegas(?) at no cost to avoid having people pay the double tax.

Just to clarify, Texas has no agreement with California regarding Sales Tax. California requires sales tax payment wether you register the car in California or drive it out of state. I believe there are some states that will waive their sales tax if you do not register the car in their state and drive it out of state.

Texas is kinder and fair to its residents. If you provide proof you bought the car out of state, drive it to Texas, and can provide proof of sales tax payment in any other state, not just California, Texas will waive sales tax when car is registered in Texas.

I'm enduring the process now. Bought mine from Fremont, paid Tesla for the car, CA sales tax, etc. Drove back to TX. They had me go do the TX state inspection ($7.00 btw) and send it to them. They are handing the entire process, so I presume they are going to title it in TX for me and I'll receive the title and plates in the mail. I'll report back to confirm once my process is completed.

Congratulations.

How was your drive to Texas? Would love to see photos of the car!

The drive back was amazing! Loved it. I ended up doing the 2,000 mile drive back by myself just short of 48 hours total.

I wish I could say it was uneventful, but encountered some animals, a sand storm, and encountered a few tornados. One seemed to be, like 50 yards away. Probably not a strong one, but still, made me very nervous. Luckily no damages to the car. The sandstorm also had me concerned, never been in one of those before.

I don't want to steal your thread, I'm planning on starting my own....but here are a few:

We also ran into some crazy weather including snow, sandstorm and high winds with tumbleweeds crossing the interstate! It was still an awesome drive.

Sadly your images didn’t upload, it only says IMG.

I also don't mean to steal your thread (I will open one too a bit down the line) but I would like to ask a few questions around here if it's ok.

Currently I'm in the initial radio silence (placed my order yesterday morning) and no contact since. I've uploaded DL pics, filled out address and chose delivery location (SC nearby).

1. There was nothing about insurance in this initial online checklist. When should I expect to have to show them my insurance card? About this, are they going to make me start paying for insurance for the car before they ship it or it's fine if I do it closer before delivery.

2. I didn't fill out the finance part as if I understood right, it's too early to go to the bank when who knows how long it'll take for the car to get shipped. Will they actually ship the car before I even go talk to my bank?

3. What else (if anything) am I going to need to do now, before Tesla ships the car to Dallas? Also, this may sound silly but, are there any specific questions I should ask my advisor once they bother to contact me about the purchase? I mean, I saw the pics, I'm fine with the car as it seems to be but I'd like to have everything covered.

4. Also, I'm not pressed by time (I would like to get it before EOY holidays though) but on the other hand I know how they operate and I'm wondering if I need to at least seem inpatient and keep pushing them to move the car sooner?

Tried to itemize my question, please anyone feel free to chime-in and @rafacq, apologies for the slight thread hijack :)

Thanks for your post. Nothing to apologize for. This is what this forum is for, to help each other out. I will be providing my answers when I can get to my computer, to much typing for my phone. LOL.

For now, don’t panic! It’s not a perfect process but at the end, everything should work out fine.
