I read a recent article about some guy's rent in his 3 bedroom apartment in SF going up to $8K and made a quick mental calcuation that you'd need to make at least $180K to afford that apartment.

Then a week later, this article comes out:

How I bought a condo in San Francisco for $268,000

"Renting here is expensive, too. A study published earlier this year said you’d need to make more than $216,000 to rent a two-bedroom apartment."

So I guess I was wrong. It's more. So how much do you need to make then to cover all your other living expenses? How much more do you need for quality of life costs above basic necessities? For the rental who has to make $216K to cover their rent, how much more do they need to make? This is why you really can't consider middle class anything less than $500K in the Bay Area. There are many other areas nearly as expensive.
