OMG! My roof window has a crack!

Yeah, windshield quality was bad for the 2014 model and worse for the 2017 variant. Plus the different aerodynamics make the windshield more of a rock magnet post-facelift.

Add that to the failure of AP to move left while passing a big truck or to move right when facing oncoming big trucks, and you end up with rock chips almost by default.

There is a C-Bond product (exterior windshield coating) that is intended to lessen results of impact. And for what it's worth, after picking up the first two rock strikes (since repaired) and having said coating applied, I haven't picked up another star at least. There have, however, been smaller impacts here and there on the windshield.

Not fun when between the cost of a replacement windshield and then replacement windshield *tint*, we get quite close to $2,000.

Somewhere I've got a forward pano area rock chip as well. Don't even want to think about what replacing those parts and pieces would cost.

How much is that coating including labor?

How much is that coating including labor?

It was $150 when I had it done. Included a warranty such that if my windshield does need to be replaced now, the coating will be applied to the new windshield for free. Application took... a couple hours iirc. Less than a half day end to end in the schedule anyway.

I don't expect it to work miracles, but if it does half of what they say it will, which is to say reduces the effect of an impact by effectively strengthening the surface (some liberties taken with that characterization for the sake of brevity), I figure that's a win after picking up 2 stars in the first 6 weeks with the new windshield. It's been a year and none since, so from an anecdotal standpoint, all good so far.

Now, the trick will be finding an authorized place to apply the coating. Extreme Autowerks in SoCal did mine. Here's a link to the other C-Bond product EA offers that is pretty interesting - it's an additive to the "soapy water" part of window tinting - useful for at minimum the at-risk rear corner windows that seem to be so much of a target in the Bay Area and elsewhere.

And if you really want to push the envelope, there's this - same church, different pew - imagine if that front door was a car window:

Yikes - sorry guys....this scares me.

Calling my insurance company on Monday.

Progressive - Georgia

I know when we lived in MA glass replacement was included in all policies as long as you had collision coverage.

How much extra premium do you pay compared to a higher deductible ?
I'm with and have been with AAA for a long time. I have our house, rental condo, '12 Leaf, '16 Rogue and our Model 3 with them. When I added the Model 3, my 6 month premium went up $522. I called around to compare several companies and this was still the best I found. I have the same full coverage on all 3 vehicles but I added full replacement value on the Model 3. The Leaf is $410 and the Rogue is $458 so total 6 month policy is $1390 on all 3.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not sure how to parse the information to answer my question. I'm wondering how often you have to replace car glass to break even on the increased premium.

My original quote from them went up a total of $6 when I was quoted at $100 deductible on all 3 cars and lowered it to $50. I have no info to compare a higher deductible but it's been my experience that lowering the deductible on comprehensive is usually fairly cheap. One of my daughters has been driving around with a cracked windshield for about a year because her deductible is $500 with a different company. When I asked her why she bought a policy with such a high deductible, her response was she just told them to give her the cheapest rates. Cheapest rate may only be a couple bucks cheaper but much more costly when you need to use it. Just asking the right questions when pricing can be very helpful and save over the long run. Keep in mind that rates not only vary by company but things like geographic location, age of drivers, driving history, discounts for safety courses, multiple policies, etc. so YMMV.

I also experienced a crack on my front windshield, probably caused by a tiny rock. It's a pretty large crack, too. I called Tesla a few minutes ago and was quoted at $959.96 for a replacement.

I could probably go through my insurance for this (GEICO), but then I'd still have to pay a $500 deductible and worry about my insurance cost going up... :(

So the order of operations here is:

1. I called Tesla, which told me to call the only glass company they deal with here, who told me to call my insurance (if I wanted to make claim).
2. Insurance refers me to 3rd party claim processor (nonsensical, btw).
3. Processor gets me on phone with glass company I just talked to.
4. Glass company orders glass through Tesla.
5. Glass company installs Tesla branded and furnished glass at the Tesla service center.
6. Tesla re-calibrates cameras / sensors.

I am tying the glass install to a service appointment to fix the fit and finish issues stemming from delivery 2 weeks ago.

Good luck everyone! This thin glass conspiracy better not be true... if it is; it'll be very expensive all the way around.

Maybe in your situation. Just doubling my deductible from $500 to $1000 saved me about $400/year, or as I look at it, in a little over a year I go under the difference it'll cost to fix the problem by upping the deductible. At least for me, it's hardly a few bucks.

I switched to 0 deductible glass coverage. between breakins and thin windshields (to save weight on ICE cars) i go through 1 per year on my 3 cars. check your insurance agent, its like $10/month w state farm

I called my local Tesla SC. They have to order the glass roof. They told me they’ll contact me in about 2 weeks and then I can schedule an appointment and give them my insurance claim info. Aside from the wait, it was a pretty easy ordeal.

you're missing the bullets that talk about how much it cost to insurance and to you. any chance you could add those?

I have this same issue. Been shopping around and so far, ameriprise is the best. Unless you are with USAA.
What is your deduct? $250 or $500?
100/300?
Adding the Model 3 increase my total yearly cost from 3.2K to ~ 5K.
Perfect driving record and no accident. Just one young driver in the house.
What is your best quote for you currently?

Did anybody have their glass broken from rocks flying from under regular cars? I've had my windshield replaced twice during my driving history and both times rocks came out from under semis. I try to avoid driving behind trucks/semis since then. I've heard rocks hitting windshild multiple times when I was behind cars, but it never resulted in cracks. Not sure if it's luck or has more to do with the weight of the car that launches the rock.
