I ordered an MR, RWD, MSM w/black, Aeros, FSD this morning ... received my RN immediately and a rep from Vegas reached out saying they have a Jan 2019 build in my config sitting in Fremont and can be in Portland in 1.5 weeks ... my concern is somebody in the Bay Area already rejected it and I'll take the train to PDX and also reject. Wait time for custom build is 4 weeks or more ... not sure which way to go, mulling.

FWIW - I had the same question back in November. My assigned VIN was 080xxx when it seemed everyone was having VINs greater than 100xxx. I called Tesla and specifically asked them if the car was rejected by another customer and two people on two different calls told me "No". It ended up the car had a November build date, so it wasn't just sitting somewhere on a lot. A Tesla delivery specialist from Vegas was texting me also, but never once answered any of my questions.
On the other hand, the car did have several paint, alignment and trim flaws that needed to be corrected by a Tesla approved body shop for a total repair bill of over $3500.

This car has been sitting somewhere since January ... Vegas gave me the VIN and said odometer reads 12 (February 19 spreadsheet shows odometer at 9.6).
I rejected a January 2019 MR for poor build quality. The door panels were out of alignment. They also told me that it had not been previously rejected. I asked the delivery coordinator what happens next for the car. He said they will just offer it to someone else. I’m not sure they really document when a car is rejected. If they did, who would ever want to buy it?
Tesla is not "custom building" you a car. They have lots full of cars in Northern California. They will try and match you with one of those. If there are none or you want to wait for the next batch you can wait until the next batch of cars meeting you configuration are built. But in the later case case don't get upset if 4 weeks turns into 6-8 weeks because they didn't around to making you specific configuration until then.

Tesla has inventory sitting around just like every other manufacturer. I had the same situation last summer and my car was not a reject. Rejects are few and far between. If you go to pick up car and it sucks, then reject it and ask for another. I think you'll be happy.
Ordered my black/black MR/19" on 2/28. Picking it up tomorrow in Chicago. 2019 VIN and I will definitely be giving it the walk-around 5x treatment to check for panel gaps, etc. Added AP at the last minute thanks to Carmax's appraisal on my trade-in which was $1300 more than Tesla. Tesla matched it without hesitation and it was just enough more for me to justify the AP.
I ended up waiting, not taking the Fremont car, and on 3/13 they assigned me a VIN ... a January 2019 build with 4 miles on the odometer that came from Sacramento. It felt right. When I called them on 3/15, the car was already in Portland and I scheduled pickup for 3/19. Everything went smooth (Tesla sent an Uber to pick us up at Union Station, took the train up from Eugene), the car was pristine, absolutely nothing wrong with it and had a fabulous drive home. I'm absolutely loving this car, best purchase ever.
