So interested in folk who ordered S or X when there was a queue like the 3.

We hold 2 In-Store Day 1 California reservations and want one ASAP, but want to wait and time the second for sometime in the future.

When does Tesla give you commit production dates vs deposit commits when you can back out with or without loss of the deposits?

1. Reservation : $1000. Done
2. Configuration : ? Deposit: ? Production date at end? -- if cancel after configuration, lose deposit?
3. Between Config-Production - Cancel ?Lose deposit?
4. Production notification: 2nd Deposit at this time?
5. Delivery notification: final payment arrangements vs finance vs lease?

Is there a delay once configuration is opened -- say during the X queue? what happened at that time if one decided NOT to configure and then one day configure? How fast was production or production date given to you?

Thanks! So excited for tomorrow to come :)

The following relates to the Model X experience, which should be more indicative of what may happen with Model 3 than Model S since it was more recent.

Configurations were opened up gradually over a couple months. Once invited to configure, you were free to order immediately or continue to wait for an indefinite amount of time. The key items to remember about the ordering process are:
1. You have a short grace period to change or cancel your order once confirming it (7 days at the time with Model X), after which time your deposit becomes non-refundable and you are subject to a change fee should you change your configuration (if allowed).
2. Your build priority is based on when your order is confirmed, not when you placed your reservation or were invited to configure. The longer you wait to confirm your order, the more people who were behind you in line have the potential to jump ahead of you.
3. Certain options may have delayed availability, in which case your order will be queued with others who are waiting for those options. Orders not containing those options will jump ahead of you in production.

No further payment is required until you take delivery. You will indicate your final method of payment via the My Tesla page, or if you have not completed it your delivery specialist will start asking you around the time the car enters production. They should also be able to provide you with an approximate delivery date once production is complete. Once your car arrives and is prepared, they will schedule the final delivery appointment where you will sign paperwork and provide payment (if you have not done so already online). In my case, I had about 3 weeks notice for the approximate date and 2 days notice for the final appointment. Being closer to the factory, it may be faster for you.

Note that with the higher volume of Model 3 deliveries, Tesla's processes may change. The above experience could be totally different for Model 3.

Once invited to configure.

Timf, I noticed that some of the Model 3 'Manage' webpages say "More information on your Model 3 is coming soon" and others say "You Model 3 invitation is arriving soon"? Do you think the people with "invitatio" messages are getting invites before the "more info" people? I waited in line 3/31, am a Model S owner, and changed my address to Oakland, CA, so I'd assume that I'm pretty high on the list after employees, but I have an "information" message and not an "invitation." It seems odd that a bunch of non-Tesla owners and people with 4/1 dates would get invitations before me. Thoughts?

Mine has changed. I've seen both... Currently the information one is showing, no longer the invite. (Model X owner, not a line waiter)
