This is a bit OT - but I wonder if that licence plate holder on the Leaf, which is like the Tesla holders in that it covers up the words GREEN VEHICLE, is legal? One of the conditions of the HTA that allows Green Vehicles in HOV lanes is that the plate is issued by Ontario, has green print and says GREEN VEHICLE.

Don't think so. Many plate holders cover up the "Yours to Discover" slogan at the bottom of blue plates already. The green plate uses green text on a white background as opposed to blue and has a trillium between the letters and numbers. That should be enough of a visual cue.

I would hope so but I don't think the HTA mentions the plate's should say Yours to Discover. But 620/05 of the HTA states:
You could argue that someone with this type of plate frame is not displaying those words.

That Leaf is more than likely Eli the service manager's car. The Leaf is great but he really deserves a Tesla for all his knowledge and work on the Model S and the Roadster. I suppose company cars will be available someday when Tesla is not so production constrained.

That would be the ChaDeMo at 2327 Boulevard du Versant Nord I assume? Would it be about a ten minute drive to reach that ChaDeMo from the Autoroute 20?

Yes, but traffic can make the trip 3X longer. Especially avoid crossing the St. Lawrence going North between 6:30 am and 9:00 am and returning South between 3:30 pm and 6:00 pm.

Interesting. The Tesla frame I have on the back does block the "Green Vehicle" lettering, but the clear transparent cover I have on the front one, to protect it from stone chips, does allow the entire plate to be viewed. I guess there's only one way to find out if this is enforced

Recently, I attended Sustainable Waterloo's annual Evening of Recognition and Tesla had a presence there. The fellow I spoke with was a Tesla employee, and he had a fully loaded black P85D. He told me it was his "company car" and his "mobile office". He apparently takes it around to events and to people who have booked test drives, presumably outside of the GTA where they have stores and showrooms.

This place is busier than most Super Chargers.

I was working at BMO First Canadian Place in downtown Toronto. Five green spots, four Teslas, three 30A chargers, two of them functional, and one electric Ford.

That is Brookfield Place, isn't it? There are normally more Teslas than that - this is my go to parking space when downtown - I will likely be there tomorrow morning. Not surprising when you figure the average salary of the investment bankers, lawyers, etc working directly above.

But I still wonder if they should be encouraging you to charge your car during the day. Doesn't this add to peak demand?

It is First Canadian Place (100 King St West). From my experience, the Ford is always there, my occasional Tesla, another occasional Tesla and and the odd electric Smart car. This was unusual.

Brookfield Place has the same setup but more Teslas. Not only do you get charging but a prime parking spot.

I park there frequently myself too. They re-organized a bit a year or so ago to assign one charger per two parking spots. The last time I was there, I got the last empty spot but a Leaf was plugged in to the charger. I left my charge port opened with the adapter in which I thought was the universal signal for "please plug me in when you leave" but when I returned, the Leaf was gone and he had just hung the cord back on the hanger.

Yep. And I was aware of that law. But you know what's funny? When I went in to the ServiceOntario site to deal with getting my green plates, they had a big sign on the wall advertising these exact same plate covers for sale, with a lifetime breakage guarantee. I almost bought one just to keep the receipt in the car in case I was ever pulled over!

ServiceOntario is a franchised private contractor and what they sell on the side does not make it legal.

Of course, but I still think it would be an interesting conversation to point out that the license frame cover on my car was sold to me by the exclusive franchisee for all license plate services in Ontario.

Curious if anyone other than the poor guy in the CBC story has ever been ticketed over this? I've used covers on all of my cars for over 35 years and have not been hassled once. I was once when I forgot to put my renewal sticker on a few days after my birthday, but the cop let me off when I showed him I had it in the car with me. No mention of the plate cover though.

It's probably one of those laws that the cops use whenever a motorist annoys them.... you know, write up as many tickets as he/she can possibly think of.

I used a cover on my N TESLA front plate but not the rear, and now the paint on the rear plate is disintegrating. Crap, should have put a cover on the back too. Man Ontario plates are soooo cheaply made these days. And they charge $99.10 to replace a personalized plate. :cursing:

I travelled to Montreal last weekend and specifically stayed in an hotel that had a Tesla destination charger. I have to go to Ottawa in a few weeks for a conference in the city centre and it looks like none of the hotels in the area have any ev charging whatsoever. How do we encourage them to start thinking about this?

Actually there are hotels with chargers - in fact nice high powered chargers. See http://suncountryhighway.com/en/Listings/1?Latitude=45.4112&Longitude=-75.6981&PageSize=25

    Best Western Plus Kanata
    Best Western Plus Macies Hotel
    Ramada Plaza Manoir Du Casino
Best Western Plus Victoria Park Suites

Also feel free to drop by our office (Diffraction) for a top-up at 70A. The charging station is now at a 35 degree angle to the ground (thank you Purolator) but it still works!
