Question to those who chose the Midnight Silver Metallic color.

I never thought midnight silver metallic was a popular color choice for all across S, X and even 3. Well, I was so wrong. In fact, initially I assumed the color was least popular because it seems less conspicuous compared to colors like red and blue. Or even white, silver and black in that matter.

Do you guys like it because it hides the dust very well?
Or maybe it blends with the road color and is less likely to get a traffic ticket?
Or is it just aesthetically you find the color more attractive than any other colors?

I know this varies based on individual's taste and style but would like to hear the opinion why people chose it over other colors.

My personal opinion: I think Midnight Silver metallic is a very elegant and sophisticated color. I went back and forth on color but my only two choices were between Pearl White (never had a white car before even 14 cars in) and Midnight Silver.

Ultimately I went with Pearl White (for a very clean and futuristic white-on-white combo with the Ultra White interior)...but I still really, really like the Midnight Silver color and know that I would have been really happy with that choice, too.

Dust/“dirt” tends to be light, so it won’t hide dirt all that well. Better than pure black but worse than some other colors. We have a similar graphite-colored SUV in the household and it usually looks a bit dingy and dirtier than my white car between washes - with the exception of after some rain...when my white MS tends to look particularly bad.

I especially like the way the Midnight Silver metallic looks at dusk in the fading light. Just looks very photogenic.

I chose it because:
I've never had an asphalt grey car before.
I liked the original dark blue. Not so much the current blue. And I already have a blue car. And a red one.
It never gets nicks (otherwise Tesla would sell touch-up paint, right?).
It's the most dangerous color for visibility to other drivers wanting to turn in front of you (a good case for the DRLs)
It does look nice, but if you're looking for a color that doesn't show dust, keep looking. (Unless maybe you live in coal country).
The Model S is a BIG car. A lighter color only emphasizes this, at least to my eye.

BTW, here's a good touch-up paint from Amazon (it's a REALLY small bottle, but a good match):

I picked it on my Honda Accord Hybrid because that was the only color on a Honda that came with the darker interior. When i bought the Tesla, i wend with the same color hoping to blend in that i had the same car to those who didn't notice things like that, I wish i would have got white, This darker color is very hard to keep clean because of the dust here in AZ. My fleet of cars and trucks that I have a t work are all white and they usually look clean.

I picked Midnight Silver Metallic because I prefer darker color for my cars and among such colors offered, I found it to be the best one. The color accentuates the contrast with the snow-white liner of the headlights and makes for a really nice combination that can't be beat by a different one IMO. I also think it's a sophisticated and interesting color in that it could seemingly change depending on the viewing angle and/or amount of light.

It’s a very unique color actually compared to the rest of the options. Everyone I’ve shown the car to comments on the color. You might think on the website or in passing that it’s just a generic dark grey. There are actually specks if green and blue you can see in bright sunlight. It was always my favorite Tesla color so I went for it on the S.

If paint didn't have extra cost, I would choose midnight silver, it's an optimally inconspicuous color for a sleeper car ;) But with it having extra cost, I wouldn't pay for a paint color, can't really see it while I'm driving anyways.

BTW: Back in the days there was the Titan color, might have chosen that, midnight comes quite close.

I chose it because I, also, like dark colored cars (I’ve had mostly black cars), but was considering getting the multi-coat red as it shows off the MS’s beautiful design lines so well. I was very close to ordering the red as it looks so good on the car, I just couldn’t go for such a bright color. Midnight Silver, though, checks all of my boxes as it’s dark, but also highlights the design of the S. I’m happy with it, though I similarly almost ordered a BMW in their “Sakhir Orange” for the same reasons I was interested in the Tesla multicoat red. Google that color, lol.

Haha, Sakhir Orange! I was in the market for an M3 for the longest time and would go back and forth between the dozens of color options. Could you imagine if you could get a Model S in Tanzanite Blue? I guess with wraps today anything is possible...

At the time, it was the only real color available other than red. No more green, brown, or dolphin grey, and the titanium (also RIP) and new blue weren't out yet. My first choice was that dolphin grey, but... you snooze, you lose and by the time AP1 had been announced, well, weren't no mo' dolphin grey to be had.

Was very happy with the midnight silver which, btw, started out being named steel grey (same paint code). There are flecks of blue in that grey and it really looks good in the sun. Especially with some Opti-Coat and after a wash/rinse with ONR (Optimum No Rinse) Blue, but I digress.

Here's the thing about dust, dirt and grime. If you have a dark car, you'll get light dust and dirt. If you have a light car, you'll get dark dust and dirt. Ain't no avoiding it. Just become one with a good 2-bucket wash regimen every 2 weeks, and some training therefor (i.e., no circular motions, lots of microfiber towels and not the crappy ones, Prima Hydrowash if you can still find it, ONR Blue for the rinse water), and all will be well.

Ticket protection... I have had Beltronics radar detectors (most recently the Bel Pro 500, which has been retired by Bel/Escort and since replaced by this), along with Waze running at all times via my phone. So far, 48 states and provinces, not quite 100,000 miles, and no tickets - despite observing all sorts of cleverish tactics by various public servants.

Caveat - if I lived in an area in which laser was used more often, I'd invest in laser shifters and probably would step up to an embedded radar detector at that point.

I chose MSMC because i thought it gave you a little more of a mixed bag on what you got due to different lighting. I liked the older dark blue but that is no longer a option, black shows dirt and scratches, and we already have white volt.

The issue with Midnight Silver is that is rarely looks as dark as the website, or indeed enzo86 and FlatSix911's shots - so make sure you have seen it in the 'flesh' before selecting it. I bought sight unseen as was surprised how light it is - that said I love it. Very similar to the metallic silver Aston Martin used way back - except with some light blue and green flakes which really catch the light in certain circumstances!

Coat it - like all Tesla paint, it's soft.

As for dirt - is 'fades' with dust - but with the Feynlabs self-heal I can (and have) actually dry-dusted the whole car in just a few minutes with real high quality micro-fiber clothes - not recommended if you don't have a self-healing coat!

Of course wet dirt is different, and even with a hydrophobic coating you'll get a decent amount of build up on the rear quarters and whole of the back - though above the fold on the sides, the hood and the roof will stay remarkably good as the dirt just won't stick.

Agreed, the color on the configurator is much darker than it is in person. Sometimes I like my midnight silver S, but I most regret just not getting the blue. I have the white seats and blue on white just looks stunning.

whatever colour you choose go see it in the day light in the flesh.
I was almost committed to the midnight silver, I too thought it was a stately finish, I thought the multi coat red to brash and bright.
Until, that is, I saw it in the light of day, where with an even lighting it was more moderate and consistent than what was seen in the show room with the spot lights.

I still think the Midnight silver is a good choice, but we were swayed to the bright side with red and a cream interior model X 100D, should be with us in April '18 :)
