Radar detector hard wire help?

While I have found a few posts about M3, I don't see much for MY and hard wiring a radar detector from near the mirror. I won't likely do the work myself but it would be nice if I could tell the installer where to tap into 12v. I know several people in their M3 used power at their center console. I did this in my M3 as well BUT, the power was on 24/7. I was hoping to find a location where it will only be hot when the car is on. Thoughts?

I could not find a reliable 12V source. The ones online for the M3 don't exist for the Y. I initially powered my radar detector/laser shifters directly from the battery. Battery went dead in 2 weeks- not sure if this was the cause. I then hard wired it to the cigarette lighter wire in the back trunk. No problems since then.

Can you elaborate a bit on the back cigarette lighter? Where exactly is it located? Where exactly did you tap in? Did you run a custom length of cable to get all the way to the back? I’m disappointed that in an electric vehicle, I can’t find an electric source to tap into. Is there really nothing closer to the front? Some of you must be running radar detectors hardwired yes?

This car has no fuse box. It is like no other car I have ever worked on. From the forums I could not find a reliable place to tap into on the Model Y. Also I did want to take chance and tap into any wire without knowing the implications. Any other car the worst thing that could happen is to pop a fuse. To get to cigarette lighter wiring you have to loosen the panel behind it on the left side of the trunk. I tapped into the red power wire and fished it back to the frunk where the laser/radar detector power box was. I was originally going to use an old phone as a display for the radar detector. This way I could lock out the false alarms and also see the vehicle speed in front of me. However I cancelled that idea since I did not want to phone to power on every time the car would wake up.

Have an MY on order and kinda shocked that trying to install a radar detector cleanly is this difficult. I personally do not want to hack a brand new car with a dremell. I've seen a post somewhere where they did a hardwire tap into the mirror (I think). I think I'll go with the longer wire/cable and try to run it under the trim to keep it clean. I'm using an Escort Passport Max.

I thought radar detectors were history. They never worked very well and since instant point and shoot laser came out they became pretty much useless. Why would you install one when Waze is so much better at warning than every detector ever made plus it is legal no matter where you are not to mention it's free.

Good point, but nothing is 100% and each person may determine what level of 'comfort' they want when traveling. I'll occasionally have to submit a report on Waze, which means that everyone traveling before me wouldn't have been alerted. Also, even with instant on - you can get an alert when a car 1/2 mile ahead of you is targeted which gives you an idea that radar is in the area. But like I mentioned, nothing is perfect To each his own. Everyone has their preferences.

They are far from useless. If you want useless let’s talk about Waze.

Some areas do heavily use Lidar. But Lidar requires more work by the police officer. He has to be stationary and use it in good weather. And pinpoint aim it. Radar can be shooting front and rear as he cruises around. New radar detectors can work very well.

Likewise some areas get good crowd sourced Waze and others you get nothing.

I see barely any Lidar and barely a blip on Waze. But plenty of Radar.

As they say ignorance is bliss.

There is also instant on IO Radar that can get you. But with a good radar detector you hope to pick it up when police officer shoots the person 2 miles a ahead of you.
