Rear seats perforated?

Why are the rear seats perforated if they aren't ventilated? I ask because of one of Elon's tweets was "Best not to have vented seats w kids though." What is the purpose of perforating the rear seats if there is no ventilation? It seems like an unnecessary risk to durability and cleanliness.

They are much cooler in the summer when perforated as they breathe. Also a more durable leather can be used and still have a soft seat. Lastly IMO it will look weird if the front seats are perforated and rear are not.

My 2012 Volt had perforated non-ventilated seats, front and back. In 2013 GM got rid of them to save on cost, now they are back in the second gen.
