I think today that would be prohibited. Or borderline. Brakes and Steer cannot be mechanically disconnected. Although, Toyota has a few cars out there with Steer by Wire (SbW). Elon hinted at progressive steering and then SbW before. In fact, I read somewhere that it's in the works, but don't quote me on that.
Whenever that becomes mainstream, the driver override will cease to be mechanic and start being electronic. Which, I guess it's fine, given how software-dependent our lives already are. But there's also a scary side to it, too, which shouldn't be ignored, especially when talking regulation.
Then, let the fun begin. We could have controls like Pedals + Wheel, Thrust + Stick, Stick, USB game pad, Bluetooth game pad, NeuraLink... I'm sure someone somewhere will hack some car's OBD and make that happen lol (come to think of it, it should be possible today!)
