Reserved personalised number plates in NSW

I have some personalised number plates reserved for my prospective model 3, and I was wondering if anyone has experience with Tesla when it comes to having the car fitted with custom plates at the time of delivery.
  • Will I need to have the plates made and deliver them to Tesla before delivery?
  • The plates will take approx. 21 days to make, so can I get them made and hold onto them until delivery?

You need to complete an RMS form giving them authority to collect the plates on your behalf.
Ask your delivery specialist and they will send you the form which you complete, scan and upload into your Tesla Account under My Documents.

In New Zealand, I emailed the Auckland Service Center about getting custom plates (T3SLA3) fitted and working in with them to get PPF applied (across the road from them).
They were very clear. The Model 3 would only be prepared by them and have standard plates fitted. No exceptions.
After signing the car over on delivery day I could do what I wanted.

I can see their point. They are expecting to be very busy. Getting a standard system working well will keep most customers happy. Trying to keep everyone happy has a greater chance of failure.

Fairly certain tesla use a delivery company for all cars in australia. That company cleans the car and gets it registered before delivering to tesla. I’ve always delivered my personal plates direct to the delivery company, which also gives me a good chance to explain my phobia about plates being installed level

Yep we had our personalised plates removed from our previous car and handed them to Tesla just prior to delivery. But excellent point about plates being installed level!!! Ours were NOT! I'm a little OCD so seeing these slightly UNLEVEL UNEVENLY Centred Plates drives me a little mental ... especially when washing and detailing the car!!! I hope it's reparable without damaging the car because I'm feeling the need to fix it and get them on LEVEL & CENTRED!!!

I’m thrilled that I’m not the only one disturbed by this problem.

Good point, I will direct my question to the service centre. Thanks.
Just heard back from a Tesla's Inside Sales Advisor:
"This will be possible, please ensure that you do bring the plates with you on the day of delivery and we can fit them for you" :D

So if you have reserved plates, get then printed and ready. :)
Even if the do say "NO OIL";)

Is there a time limit on how long we can hold the plates before the vehicle arrives (nsw)? Seems difficult to time this not knowing when delivery is going to happen.

Also thinking about getting euro size, but not sure how Tesla is planning to attach the front plate.

This is for NSW...
You can reserve plates at myPlates.com.au for up to a year. You pay a yearly fee, which you will pay each year anyway. That fee is based upon the number series. Full custom are about $495 per year, personalised to a few fixed letter-number groupings like 33.ABC or ABC.12X etc are $107 per year.
Then when you want to get the plates you need to pay the one off design cost of say $180 depending upon design. The plates take up to 21 days to get made, or longer depending upon the design you want. If you want cats or footy designs it may be longer than 21 days.
The plates can then be picked up at a registry office.

My custom plates took 2 days from ordering to receiving in Melbourne Metro.... and I had until 12pm the following day to change my mind. Thanks Vic Roads - Great service.

Ordered a pair of Slimline plates, going to look at buying some backing plates from Autobahn requiring no fixing through the plates, not sure how they will be attached to the front of the model 3. Any ideas?

Get automotive grade double sided tape and attach them with that. You can purchase it from places like Supercheap Auto or Repco.
Clean the area to be attached with isopropyl or metho and use a generous amount of tape.

I hope it’s not another smug number plate like “NO OIL” or “LOL OIL”... it’s just embarrassing for the rest of us.
On very rare occasions I have contemplated getting vanity plates for my Model 3 (whenever I get around to actually ordering one), but I always baulk at the realisation it will make me look like a wanker. The Model 3 will turn enough heads as it is, no need to draw even more attention to myself. And I certainly don’t want a plate that might provide a clue to identifying me, like containing my initials or similar.

Occasionally I have tried a few different smart-alec options to see if they were available (NSW). A year ago I found “EEEEEE” was available and for about 2 seconds considered reserving it. Then I thought better of it. That plate has since been taken.

What I don’t get is people who get vanity plates that repeat the make and model of the car that’s already on the badge on the back. You know, like an Audi A5 with plate “AUDI A5”. No sh*t, Sherlock, you’re paying $495 a year for that? The manufacturer has already put that on the back of the car for free, you fool.

$469 or $109 in NSW.

There are many reasons people pick personalised plates, one of them is simply they're easier to remember. Another is they can be fun.
Not sure why there's so much gatekeeping and judgement around. Live and let live, no?
