OK, so on top of all that, I have heard repeatedly that there are some "mutant" motors that make more power than the regular production motors. My guess is maybe the base/sport motors ended up being machine wound, and maybe a small number of hand wound motors got into selected cars and caused them to perform better than usual. Assuming these better motors do exist, I am not sure if there is any way to know which Roadsters got them.

well, that you can be sure of…

there‘s quite a few strange things during production-line.

remember that all 1.5 US Roadsters had the full carbon trunk tray, at some stage they changed it to a flocked GFK tray.
at the EU- Roadsters that happened roundabout VIN #110 (this is the last one i personally know with a carbon trunk tray).

when you read carefully through all available service bulletins, you‘ll find out, that there were a few Roadsters with a VIN below 110, wich were especially delivered wirh a flocked trunk tray, non carbon. we had four of those in our workshop allready, funny they‘re all sport, jet black, black intereur, those further mentioned (ugly) long rubber flaps on front fender (no reflector) and came with black rims.
i cannot work out if they were initially made for a special purpose or costumer, two of those are still with their 1st. owner, both owners didn‘t configurate the car at the time of order but bought them directly in a service center - so this may be a clue that they were made for something special ?
as for the handwound/machinewound engine i‘m unable to say anything, i can‘t tell the diference but if it helps others, i‘ll make some pics of the labels from all EU-Roadster motors i have easy access to…

@ TEG:

sir, please update your list, # 003 is not white, it‘s glacier blue, grey intereur (we picked it up for service today)

Thanks. I knew is was Glacier Blue already from lots of previous pictures. Must have been a typo showing it as white.

Our Vin 673 2.0 has a full carbon fiber trunk tray, which has shown it's wear from the original owner's golf bag usage

ATTENTION:

i have to revoke what i wrote about the engines of the eu roadsters !

while servicing EU # 003 i've noticed, that the motor is marked with a "B" and says on the label: ASSY MOTOR EU-BASE. funny EU # 009 )wich is a 100% twin of 003) has a MOTOR EU-SPORT but it'salso a Signature250 Base. so after not having seen any BASE-motors untill that one, today i spected the 2nd. one in EU # 064 - sorry for the mistake !

yes, the codes i knew. i was just stunned that after quite a few years of servicing roadsters only now i came across some base-motors.

the (Tesla insider) info i had before was explained, that the base-motors didn‘t pass the european/german EMV (german: elektromagnetische verträglichkeit, means the electromagnetic cmpatibility) tests, that‘s why they put sports-motors in all roadsters

There is still some mystery about what is different inside between the various Roadster motors.

We know from ESS teardowns that some battery innards changed over time.
But I don't think too many motors have been disassembled for any kind of comparative postmortem to see what may have changed with them, and specific differences between Base and Sport.
