Russia/Ukraine conflict

This was retweeted by Ben Hodges. Would be really nice if it could gain traction.

Bashkortostan right now. One of the poor provinces of Russia. Of course, its governor is fully supportive of war & hateful of the "decadent" West. And of course, his daughter lives in Austria.

The same protest from another point of view?... Looks kind of big.

One of the largest protests in Russia, Bashkortostan.

Seems that protest was ~two days ago.

EDIT: Or is he referring to other previous protests than the ones on film here?...

Telegram blocked six channels covering the protests in Bashkortostan for two days. The channels "Kushtau Bayram", RusNews, "The One from Bashkort", "Nuclear Ant", "As it is about Bashkortostan" and "Irandyk Sabantuy" disappeared from open access yesterday and today.

These news channels covered the protests in defense of activist Fail Alsynov. Yesterday the channel "Kushtau Bayram" called to come to the trial of Fail Alsynov.

Today in Bashkortostan residents reported problems with access to the messenger - WhatsApp.

Well... Criticize all you want, but as I understand it 7 billion euros will at least keep UKR afloat a couple of months...

If every nation of the West gave a similar amount proportional to their GDP, Ukraine would be all set.

Zelensky is very impressed with the Patriots. Says it has been able to take down any Russian missiles. Mentions PAC-2 and PAC-3 variations and that Russians are "shocked" at how effective the systems are, so some subtext perhaps there of what the system has achieved without naming specific incidents.

Perhaps this is related to purported Ukraine's brilliant tactic of moving Patriots to the front lines, activating expendable S-300 or similar units briefly for radar detection/targeting, then feeding info to the Patriots for the missile strike, then scooting Patriot components to safety:

I ran across this at ISW:
The threat of US secondary sanctions is reportedly having a large-scale effect on Turkish–Russian financial ties. Russian outlet Kommersant stated on January 17 that Turkish banks have “universally” begun to refuse to work with Russian banks.[63] Kommersant reported that sources indicated that Turkish banks’ fear of secondary sanctions sharply increased after the United States authorized secondary sanctions on financial institutions on December 22, 2023, that facilitate Russian sanctions evasion and support the Russian war effort in Ukraine. Bloomberg reported on January 16 that at least two state-owned Chinese banks ordered reviews of their business with Russian clients and will sever ties with sanctioned Russian entities and entities tied to the Russian defense industry following the US’ December 2022 secondary sanctions authorization.[64]

Love to hear thoughts on the significance here. Seems it could be big?

This could be the beginning of widespread rebellion or it could be a blip. We'll see how it plays out.

It isn't done until it has Biden's signature on it. The Senate part of the deal is easy.

Allegedly:

CAN'T MAKE THIS UP: Wagner PMC mercenaries uncovered a giant drug trafficking ring originating out of the Defense Ministry and the FSB in Moscow when they caught one of their own with drugs and had him lead them to the dealer, and so on, up the chain. They are attached to Russia's 331st Guards Parachute Airborne Regiment in occupied Luhansk.

In response, Moscow sent SOBR and MoD spetsnaz to hunt them down and kill them. They say they will fight to the death. [...

Hopefully France will deliver 78 Ceasar howitzers to UKR this year.

The French Ministry of Defense uncovered the details of the order for dozens of Caesar howitzers and announced the transfer of AASM bombs.

The news was published on the Department’s official website. [...]

Within the project, the plan is to purchase 78 Caesar ACS, which should be manufactured in 2024. [My u.]

It is assumed that each of the countries participating in the coalition will contribute to the financing of the project. Thus, France will use 50 million euros from its Support Fund of Ukraine to order 12 out of 78 howitzers. Ukraine funded the production of 6 more ACS.

“What remains is to fund 60 more. This is a call that I pass on to all allies as part of our cooperation in the Ramstein format,” Sebastien Lecornu stated.

The Minister also noted that France will deliver the first six Caesars in the coming weeks, and will also be able to manufacture the next 72 units during 2024. [...

Ukrainian marines are holding the Dnipro bridgehead and the Russians just keep dying trying to push them out.

Russian Combat Units Suffer Brutal Losses in Dnipro Bridgehead Battles

In the east the Russians are throwing waves of poorly armed and poorly trained troops at the Ukrainians to try and overwhelm them with bodies. Along the Dnipro the Russians are using their units that should be trained better and are equipped with more modern weapons. By just holding onto the bridgehead they are inflicting irreplaceable losses on the Russian army.

The quality of their regular army units at this point is probably degraded from February 2022. Training of new troops has been spotty at best and losses were very high in 2022. But these troops are better equipped (as demonstrated as having the increasingly rare T-90s) so should have better combat capability than the meat waves. Ukraine by sitting back in defensive positions and chewing up attack waves is causing a lot of damage to Russia.

There is so much hand wringing about Ukraine not taking ground, but Ukraine is making progress in other ways. They are causing a lot of trouble in rear areas hitting military targets in Crimea and elsewhere, they have retaken the western Black Sea to a point grain exports are back to pre-war levels, and they are inflicting massive casualties on the Russians.

This has turned into a war of attrition and those are won one of two ways: destroy the enemy's ability to make war material and ability to fight (which was the way WW II was won), or to destroy the enemy's will to fight (which is the way insurgency wars are usually won by the insurgents). Ukraine is doing the latter. The former is pretty difficult in this war. Both sides have their war goods manufactured out of range of the other's combat reach.

There is some war weariness in Ukraine, and Russia is doing all it can to keep any news of dissent out of the public eye, but the average Russian has a lot less interest in this war than the average Ukrainian. For Russia this is an optional war, for Ukraine it's a necessary war. If Russia gives up and goes home, their territory will be the same as it was in 2014. If Ukraine gives up, they cease to exist.

France hasn't sent any of their Leclerc tanks to UKR. Why don't they do some kind of deal with Germany? That way Germany could get like at least ~40 French Leclerc tanks. And then Germany could transfer ~40 more Leopard 2 tanks to UKR.

And the US could do something similar. The US could do a deal with either the UK or Germany and transfer at least ~50 Abrams tanks to either UK or Germany. If the UK gets the Abrams tanks, then the UK could transfer ~50 more Challenger 2 tanks to UKR. And if Germany instead gets the Abrams tanks then Germany could transfer ~50 more Leopard 2 tanks to UKR.

EDIT:
Guessing that Germany would like to partner with the UK on this so it's just not Germany sending Leopard 2 to UKR. So it would probably be best if it is some kind of even mix of Challenger 2 and Leopard 2 that is sent to UKR.

It would take time to transfer any Abrams because the depleted uranium armor would have to be replaced.

What is more useful to Ukraine would be more Bradleys. The US has around 2000 in storage and they don't need modification to be exported. The 25mm gun on the Bradley is more than a match for everything the Russians have except for tanks and as recent videos have shown Bradleys can take out a T-90M when they ambush them. 500 Bradleys would have a much bigger impact than 50 more of any tank the west could send.
