Sentry Mode?

You won't get alerts without the USB inserted -- you can't turn on sentry mode unless there's a USB drive inserted.

That is not correct

Sentry works fine without USB storage. Still shows the HAL display, still flashes the lights and puts up the BEING RECORDED message on the screen when alerted, etc...

It just won't move any recorded dashcam footage to the Sentry folder when alerted- because there isn't any footage to move.

USB is needed for dashcam which is the only thing that actually records video.

Sentry simply moves the last 10 minutes of dashcam video if it goes to alert mode- OTHER than not being able to do that move action Sentry does everything else the same without USB media in the car.

Yes and No,

No: you will need a USB memory device to capture and save the videos that Sentry mode records so you can view them.

Yes: Sentry mode videos are sent to Tesla via the Data Sharing. You can disable the upload of video to Tesla in the Data Sharing section.

Tesla uses the Sentry mode videos to help make adjustments to it.

I stand corrected. What would be the practical purpose of using sentry mode without having a USB inserted to save the videos?

To still have it flash, and display the YOU ARE BEING RECORDED warning, to scare people off, and do the lights and CRAZY LOUD MUSIC if the alarm goes off.

In fact, older Teslas that don't have dashcam still get sentry mode for that exact reason.

To hopefully scare off the miscreants with empty threats of their presence being recorded (of course, they wouldn't know that) and, if their actions trigger alarm mode, a blaring car horn, flashing lights and a fugue played through the sound system. Basically, it'll serve as a regular car alarm.

Think of it as a different kind of inactive car alarm system. The display gives a warning (alert state--the car is alive and watching you), then if the alarm state gets triggered the headlights keep flashing, the horn keeps honking and the music inside the car goes blaring. If the perp entered the car through a broken window, anyone within earshot would hear the horn and music and it wouldn't be fun to be inside the car.

Older cars without a usb drive stil have Sentry Mode even though they don't have TeslaCam.

:) just finished reading the whole thread and see that a number of us understand TeslaCam and Sentry Mode, which is good. Always another new group of Tesla owners to get up to speed on it. :D
