A toggle that when home, state of charge is automatically set to 80% (or whatever is chosen). I came back from a roadtrip when I set max SoC at 100%. I forgot to change it when home, so when it charged at night, it sat at 100% for several hours.

This is no big deal! Some people charge to 100% all the time. The general suggestion is that it is better for the battery, over the long term, to avoid charging to 100% on a routine basis.

I thought it was the length of time the vehicle sat idle at 100% that was dangerous and not the frequency of charging to 100%.

Dangerous is not the right word. To put it simply, your battery degrades with time, and it degrades faster if it's charged high. Ideally you don't leave it high (e.g. 100% SOC) for too long. You are simply optimizing the degradation.

I have HomeAssistant set up to do this automatically for me. Not 80%, but a low charge limit based on solar and outside temperatures. HA also sets my charge limit once to 90 % as I leave the house.

I'd like to add to this.... The chevy bolt had a feature that if the battery was <40%, the car would charge as soon as it was plugged in to get to 40%. Then it would stop and wait for off peak electric rates and start again. Sure would be nice if Tesla did that.
