Superchargers in public parking lots

San Diego could use chargers in parking lots (already lost chargers in the Stadium, went up north to LA!) Seriously though SDGE is about to make energy for electric vehicles more expensive than gas vehicles.
SDG&E shocks solar users with rate change

Here's the current SDGE tier system
Tier 1 0-380 kwh $0.27
Tier 2 381-1168 kwh $0.48
Tier 3 >1169 kwh $0.55

Tier 1 is just enough for running your house, so Tier 2&3 are for charging your car

Average ICE car: 22 miles per gallon = 0.045 gallons per mile = (@ $4/gallon) $0.18 per mile.
Model S: 0.333 kwh per mile = (@ $0.48/kwh) $0.16 per mile.

SDGE is about to up the rates, which will likely make buying energy for a Tesla more expensive than buying energy for a ICE vehicle.

Tesla should shade all over the mall parking lots with solar panels, and have batteries so the energy could also power superchargers at night. The shade keeps the cars cool as well. Some related links:

Inductive charging at each stall would be awesome as well.

Pardon my French, but what the *hell* is wrong with your utility? I am on a fixed rate plan here in Portland Oregon and it is like 11 cents per kWh. I get that it is expensive to transmit power to Southern California, but the distribution costs I don't think would be materially different once power is delivered to the local municipal grid.

I presume that a whole ton of "social policy" costs have been baked into your insane rates?

Source of energy for these super chargers: Solar canopies most likely, local power company has high rates.
Not enough solar panels for EV charging at home, and local power company has the highest rates in the nation, though from the latest posts I just discovered that EVs have their own charging rates with local power company (though 4pm to 9pm is still outrages.) Only 1 super charger station in this county of millions of people so far, so more would be useful. Any other questions?

Source of energy: whomever Tesla pays. Cost: commercial rates, not residential rates.

PS: Outrageous.

Since it's publicly available, you should have no trouble providing a link showing how much Tesla pays the power company at its existing super chargers, I am curious to find out. If residential rates were cheap there would be less need for super chargers, at least for local use.

Tesla increases cost of using its Supercharger stations, still says it ‘will never be a profit center’
Tesla says the super chargers would never be a profit center, so I assume the price customers pay is not far off from what Tesla pays per kwh.

This is good news!

Does anyone know if there are superchargers that have been installed in publicly owned parking lots?

Note that "Mall" is a pretty broad classification in which I've included the now popular "mixed-use development".

Trends:

The favorite:
Malls are clearly the most common location, for obvious reasons. Trending slightly up, which is to be expected given that retail is generally struggling.

Up:
Grocery stores have seen a steady increase. I think we should expect it to be a growth area. Grocery stores are pretty much the perfect location for urban Superchargers, for people who need an alternative to home charging.
Gas station locations are also trending up. 2017 was the year of the gas station with almost as many new Superchargers at gas stations as at malls, but although not that high, 2018 is already higher than 2016 (2018 has seen a total of 91 new openings, the same as the whole of 2016).
Parking garages: with the new urban Superchargers, there have already been 8 opened in parking garages this year, which is more than half the current total.

Down:
Hotels are now clearly out of favor, with only 5 new openings this year so far. The previous low was 13, in 2013. I think many Tesla owners will be happy to know this.

Money,

I went to the old Mammoth Lakes Supercharger thread to confirm my recollection that the Supercharger there was on town property:

Mammoth Lakes Superchargers

Greetings from Mammoth Lakes! We (Town council) just approved an agreement with Tesla on September 16 to install 8 superchargers located at our town park and ride lot on Old Mammoth Rd. The plan is to be up and running before winter, we very are excited to be on Superchanger Map very soon. We look forward to seeing you in town.

It would seem to me that we need to include the Mammoth Lakes Supercharger as in a town-owned parking lot. Thanks for all your hard work!

Triadelphia isn't at a mall at all. It's at the Hampton Inn.

Port Huron is in the parking lot of the Doubletree Inn.

I don't recall there being a public host for London, KY. It's in the middle of some fast food places and gas stations.

Normal is a parking garage rather than a parking lot. It's very similar to Colorado Springs.

Yup. Don't know how I marked it as being at a mall.

Port Huron is in the parking lot of the Doubletree Inn.

This is one of those tricky ones. The Doubletree seems to be part of a public-private partnership with a hotel and convention center.
Not sure of the arrangement and I'm not sure who got the say on the chargers.

Is it in a part of the lot reserved for Doubletree?

Tesla charging stations coming to convention center

I don't recall there being a public host for London, KY. It's in the middle of some fast food places and gas stations.

It seems to be in the public lot by the Tourist Information Center (and World Chicken Festival Association) building.
It's across a back road from a Gas station/McDonalds.

Normal is a parking garage rather than a parking lot. It's very similar to Colorado Springs.

Noted. I just have it marked as the Transportation Center but wrongly described it as a lot.

Superchargers in the USA at publicly-owned

* In a parking lot, but aren't they all...

My original question to the group was superchargers in publicly owned Municipal Lots, which would require special agreements between an agency ( like an Inc. City) and Tesla. In my case, Tesla decided to not partner with our
agency, and went to our regional mall.

Also, I have a sneaking suspicion Tesla has a "special" deal on energy rates and connection fees, conversations lead me to believe Tesla is treated differently than any other commercial applicant.
