Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints

Recurrent found that Tesla’s four models almost always calculated that they could travel more than 90% of their advertised EPA range estimates regardless of external temperatures. Scott Case, Recurrent’s chief executive, told Reuters that Tesla’s range meters also ignore many other conditions affecting driving distance.

The EPA cautioned that individuals’ actual experience with vehicle efficiency might differ from the estimates the agency approves. Independent automotive testers commonly examine the EPA-approved fuel-efficiency or driving range claims against their own experience in structured tests or real-world driving. Often, they get different results, as in the case of Tesla vehicles.

It is not entirely clear, but it looks like the main focus is the range estimate that can be toggled to percentage on the main screen. This shows rated remaining range based on remaining charge, and is not an adaptive guess-o-meter like in some other EVs or the energy screen in Teslas. Think of it more like a high resolution "fuel gauge".

It does seem to be a source of confusion on these forums. On EVs with adaptive guess-o-meter range displays, those seem to be a source of confusion on forums about those EVs.

Of course, drivers with lead feet or other inefficient driving habits will get worse than the rated range. But that seems to describe most drivers generally.

Your Tesla will learn your driving habits, and while initially posting the expected range when starting out on a trip, they will, in real time, recalculate your distances to empty along your trip. They will give you an estimate of where you should stop at Superchargers along the way, and estimate how long you should stay hooked up to have enough juice to get to your next estimated stop. Often they will not advise going to the extreme outter range, but coservativley direct you to a closer Supercharger for a short stop, when charging efficiency will be greatest, giving you a quicker charging experience. This technology will take into consideration elevation changes, average driving speeds, wind conditons, Temperature conditions, condition of your battery, rain, snow, vehicle load etc.

Poster is claiming this technology is to fool you into believing you have greater range than advertised, but in reality is just using click bait headlines to grab readership. (Man bites dog!)

You buy an iPhone, computer, power tool, table saw, TV, or any new tech, and you have to educate yourself. The instructions for any of the above, rarely cover everything you need to know.
Educating yourself these days has never been easier, and we’ve all had to do this since we’ve been born. Until now it seems.
Unfortunately, entitlement is also never been worse these days.
