Hey guys,

Quick question: my Model 3's delivery date is this Friday at 1pm. The service center (where pickups happen in Texas) is on the other side of town from me. I asked for a complimentary pickup / Uber/Lyft up there and they countered with delivering the car to my house. That would be a big benefit for me as I work from home. I do have the availability to step out if there's a huge benefit in getting up to the service center to look over the car in person.

What does that mean as far as the Model 3 Delivery Checklist? Is it the same as if I were to check the car out in person? After hearing about a number of production issue (dust under paint, misalignment of trunk/frunk, panel gaps, etc.) I want to be sure I don't get stuck with a vehicle and have the service center claim the car was in good condition when I got it.

Has anyone had Tesla deliver their car to their house before and if so, what was your experience?

Thanks

I was hoping someone would be able to share that you can log issues that Tesla would agree to fix in future instead of being on my own.

The main difference I would see is, if you take delivery at the delivery center and find an issue with the car you cant live with or wait for them to fix, there is always the possibility the delivery center has another vehicle with your spec they can substitute in.

Thats what happened to me anyway, and it obviously would not have happened if I took home delivery... I would have either had to accept the first car as it was, or reject it and get back in the queue.

Also, for me personally, I "chatted up" my delivery specialist in a friendly way, and enlisted his help in looking over my car. He found issues I did not, which lead to both his advice to reject the car, and his working with his manager to swap in another VIN they had in stock that was not allocated. That may not happen for everyone.

Personally, "I" would not do home delivery unless I could not get to the delivery center. For reference, my delivery center was about 55-60 miles away, so not "far" but not "around the corner" either... and with traffic it took me 2 hours to get home.

Interesting, thanks. I think I’ll go to the pickup location. It’s a half hour Lyft but probably way less headache in the long run.

My delivery yesterday was originally scheduled for home delivery. Receive that information via email. I called the store and indicated I preferred a in-store pick upd orientation. They had no problem with that request. Glad I did it because they were a few things my original orientation person could not answer. Needed a more knowledgeable delivery expert to guide me through some questions. You’re definitely doing the correct thing with an in-store pick up. By the way, you’re going to love your car!

They do the home deliveries for people within close proximity of wherever your car is. In that case, it wouldn't cost you much to just uber over to them. They were going to do that to me but then my temp plates got hung up in processing with the DMV and they offered to let me just come pick it up. I ubered over and drove off the lot with not temp plates. Cop is immediately behind me for a short while but does nothing and drives around. I do think being able to reject the car on site at the center makes things feel easier should anything go wrong, but home delivery really isn't too much to worry about either. I'd suggest using a checklist like this one (here) and just making sure you run the gamut on everything as soon as it arrives to you. You can also search "What to look for when your Model 3 Arrives???" on YT for a video of another guy who had home delivery as well and has good tips and suggestions about the experience and how to prepare for / handle it.

Thanks, I definitely have that checklist and am planning on using it tomorrow.

I had home delivery back in December. I live within 20 miles of the North Houston Service center.

My car was delivered with a few paint defects, which I identified and took pictures of. I was told to email them to a delivery support email address. I was not given any kind of "owe you" list like others have said they have gotten.

I never received an email back. I sent another email and also escalated to the Client advisor who I worked with when I purchased the car. Within a day I had someone calling me to schedule an appointment to bring the car for them to look at and see what could be done. I'm hoping they don't say repaint because I really don't want to go that route.

Would it have been different at the center? Maybe I would have had that appointment right away. Maybe not. Who knows. I haven't lost too much sleep over it and they also haven't given me any pushback about the items...yet. So far, no regrets on taking delivery at home.

What's different at the service center is you get a due bill and you also have the option to simply refuse the delivery if the problems are too much for you to live with.

Problems like fisheyes or minor things with the clearcoat (surface scratches or imperfections like dust nibs) can be fixed with paint correction.... if anything is past the clear coat then the car has to be re-painted. Examples would be fingerprints or debris under the clearcoat itself, scratches or scuffs that got through the clearcoat.
