Tesla moments

After driving 992 for three years and only seeing one MS on the road ( in MD.... Although there are supposed to be plenty of them in the area) I was caught frozen in the moment when I walked out of a store in Crofton to see this beautiful scene. That was my Tesla moment!

no turn indicators when changing lanes is a California thing. I've never seen it so prominent as it is here (and I've lived all over the U.S.). Growing up, my dad was the only person I knew who didn't use them, and now I know why. He lived in California for a few years in the 80s.

Not just CA. Here in VA turn signals seem to be considered a sign of weakness and you often won't be let over when using them. Mostly north in DC and a bit less so in southeast VA.

I still use them though. I figure, better to telegraph my intention and wait for someone patient enough to let me over.

Tesla moment: nice security guard today said my car was talk of the town and was full of compliments. Not used to the attention but I did remember to thank him. Odd thing is I only go there maybe once every other week!

Second day with the car, two Tesla Moments:

#1 Driving by a park giving a ride to some of my co-workers. A guy starts yelling, pointing, and running towards us from the park and catches up to us at a red light. All he wants to do is ask how it rides :)

#2 On my way to CVS to pick up a prescription some guy in an Audi pulls up behind me and starts eyeballing the car; he then pulls into my right blind spot to get a better look. When I get into the LEFT turn lane he suddenly darts over behind me and follows the rest of the way to CVS. As we're getting out of our cars, he quicky and loudly announces "I am not a stalker!" -- at which I giggle because I had just thought that particular thought. Turns out that he had just test driven one in Columbus the week before. While we were talking, another guy comes over. "Hey, is that the new Maserati?" My stalker Jim and I just look at each other and laugh.

A week or two ago I was driving north on I-15 between Provo and Salt Lake City and a black sedan pulls up next to me with the owner doing the "we're not worthy" bow out his window, with both arms. His wife/gf was sitting in the passenger seat holding the steering wheel so they didn't go off the road.

Regardless of being worried about the safety of my wife and child in the car I couldn't help but burst into laughter.

My second Tesla moment. I was coming home from visiting my sister on the other side of the town we live, with my parents in my Tesla with me. We stopped on a local spring to get some water. There were two other cars there. My father and myself waited for our turn, got our water canisters full and went back to my car. My mother was sitting in my car during the time, and said that the guy that was at the spring before us walked a full 360 degrees around my car, before going back to his car. He either did not notice my mom sitting at the back seat or did not care. :)

One week into ownership, here are my favorite moments...

1. First time with a good acceleration with the kids in the back seat, my oldest says, "It's just like Verbolten!" For those of you not from my part of the country, Verbolten is a roller coaster ride at Busch Gardens Williamsburg that has an uphill accelerator feature at the beginning of the ride that sends everyone back into their seats.

2. Neighborhood had a casino night in our clubhouse. Dude showed up in a new Maserati. No one went to look at it- they were all hovering around my MS.

3. Kids encouraging me to honk the horn at people peeking too closely at the car when we can see it in the parking lot from our seat at restaurants. Haven't done it yet.

Generally speaking everyone who has come up to talk about it knows the brand and a little about it. They've all been polite. Several have asked about cost (a sore subject for many, including me) and I dodge the question by just saying it's expensive.

Very cool!

Last fall, at the Short Pump movie theater, a few kids were checking out the car which is fine. We were watching them from afar. Then they went up and touched the door handles, and we started to freak out that they might do something more. But before we could honk the horn on the app, they went away.

2 weeks into ownership here. A security guard was scoping out my S85 a few days ago in my work parking lot. So happens that I turned on the A/C from the mobile app from my office because I was about to leave. As I'm walking out, he walks in and says "is that your Tesla?". I say it is. He says "It seems to be on!!". LOLz. I had to tell him that was the A/C.

I've also been asked the cost question, including by this security guy. I always say that it starts around $68K and goes well past $100K depending on the options you get. Haven't had any follow-up questions to that.

@Botbldr45, you probably made their day as much as they did yours. Very cool! Even in the Tesla-saturated Bay Area, the Roadster has become a very rare sight indeed.

Truth be told, that is Botbldr's own electric blue roadster, as you can tell from his avatar. Not sure who has the white Model S around these parts, but there are now three MS driving daily to Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt MD, including mine. And there are a couple of others in the Annapolis area.

This happened on my way home from delivery. I pulled up to an intersection and a Ford C-Max (I think it was a C-Max) pulled up beside me. There were 4 people in the car. The lady in the back seat said "You know you have my car, right?" She said the only thing different would be the interior color. I then said, "I guess I have to show you what she can do, right?" Then all 4 heads started going up and down vigorously. Then I smoked them. Awesome first day!

I've been watching for this post! That's awesome. Glad you had a great Tesla moment on Day One.

Little League tonight. Game ends and we start packing up. Son says "Daddy, there's a crowd of people standing behind your car." I walk up and put his gear in the trunk, assuring the bystanders from the opposing team they're not in my way. Then the questions start.

So do you like the car? (Love it.) Is it really as good as everyone says? (Better!) How many miles can it go on a charge? (265, then a long discussion ensues about how I always have as much range as I need because I charge at home.) Have you used a supercharger yet? (Another long discussion about being able to drive up & down the east coast and across the country, and how a snack + bathroom break is enough charging time to get to the next stop.) How long did you have to wait for yours? (Roughly 2 months.) Oh, that's not bad at all!

Refreshingly, no questions about price. Several compliments later, they leave. Then as I finish loading the car, a black P85 drives by. We exchange a friendly wave and I offer a thumbs-up.

Great way to end a day that started at the Rockville service center, where I spent over an hour talking Tesla with Erick (who checked me in and out) and another customer with a blue 60. And all almost exactly a year after my first test drive (Father's Day 2013).
