One of the concerns that I had with waiting on my Tesla is should I sell my car or trade it in. Without getting a trade-in offer from Tesla until a few days prior to taking delivery, it was hard to make an informed decision.

To get an idea of my vehicles value, I took my vehicle to Carmax and received an $18,000 offer about three weeks before my expected delivery.

Tesla ended up with an offer of $17,400. I accepted the Tesla offer to keep things easy.

6 days before delivery, after all paperwork was complete, I ran across a post that indicated Tesla matched Carmax offers. I reached out to my adviser to see if they will match the Carmax offer. She said they would, but it may delay delivery. I took a chance and had them redo the paperwork. Took them about 24 hours to have new paperwork and it did not have any effect on my delivery.

For reference, here are estimates from other car appraisal websites:
Edmunds - clean condition, $17.1 trade in, $20.3 private sale
    KBB - good, $17.1-20.1k trade in, $19.9 - 23.1 private party
    Nada $17.5 trade in

After visiting CarMax, I did list my vehicle for sale on autotrader, cars.com and craigslist. I listed it for $21k to see what I could do on my own. After 2 weeks for sale, my inquiry volume consisted of about a dozen spammers (mostly from cars.com) and 2 somewhat interested resellers that each offered me $18.5k, not one private person reached out to me.

I know the CarMax match is included on other posts, but it took me a while to find it so I thought it would bring it to attention for all.

I was able to get my Sales person to get a Trade-In quote before I even placed my order. I just e-mailed him a ton of pictures and information. Took 24 hours. It fell right in the range of KBB Trade-In Estimate (low in the range.)

I was planning on selling it private party... It has 80,000 miles but is in really good condition. I feel like I can get at least 110% of the trade-in (which is what I need to off-set the sales tax benefit on trade-ins with a margin of safety for my hassle.) I'll also get the Carmax quote just for reference.

Tesla offered me $17,400 for my car as well. But Carmax had offered $17,000 so I took it. I was hoping for 18,000.
The Carmax experience in getting the quote was better than expected don't see why anyone wouldn't do it.

In practice quite a lot of people have found that selling your car separately, rather than doing a trade-in, makes the Tesla paperwork process (which is typically an ungodly mess) easier.

Trading my car in saves me about $1,200 in taxes so I’ll choose ungodly mess. At least that’s how it is in Ohio.

I'm going on 4 weeks waiting on a quote from Tesla. I might give up the wait and just go to Carmax.

I’m less than 1 week waiting for the Tesla quote. My delivery specialist guy said they’re really backed up and simply suggested I go to CarMax instead and send him the quote.

I waited a few days to see if Tesla would come back with an offer but yesterday I sent over the CarMax quote and asked to proceed.

Today my VIN officially showed in my account and I have a delivery date of 9/8. My trade info still isn’t updated, however.
