I don't have a Tesla (I know I know...), so let me ask: there is already an alert system in place for when there is no weight in the driver seat?

Yup. In fact the car will throw itself into park if in drive at low speed for rollaway protection.... folks discover this sometimes when they lift up to get something out of their pocket at a drive through or something and the seat no longer detects enough weight in the seat.

Never tested it at speed- I guess it doesn't do anything above X MPH or something.

The strongest persuasion, is grounded in the beliefs of an idea’s adversaries. The states that prohibit direct sales of Tesla vehicles, are almost always Republican bastions of conservatism. The American conservative movement counts as one of its foundational tenets, free market economies.

“There are no limits to what free men, free women, and free markets can accomplish.” –Jack Kemp. ...

“We who live in free market societies believe that growth, prosperity, and ultimately human fulfillment are created from the bottom up, not the government down.” –Ronald Reagan.

“Free men and free women living in free market societies ought to be endowed with a freedom to choose; a freedom to create their own fulfillment.” –JB Leonard

Lol....the Cheney/Rumsfeld interpretation of "free markets", marketed by Reagan and in place since the 70's, is literally the only reason we needed Germany to begin this renewables revolution without us.

Sure a libertarian from South Africa is now scaling everything globally, but I would argue it's despite the tooth-and-nail efforts of Reaganomicists who've been trying to bury Tesla since inception so they can maintain highly profitable centralized fossil production.

We're far more corrupt than we are "free market". Just take a look at how our utilities dictate state policy and self-regulate in the US. Never happen in democratic socialist Germany.

There was an established Horse Carriage Co who converted to horseless; so how did they pull off this change? I forget who it was, but any lessons there? Did the dealers sell anything on 4 wheels or did they split into separate businesses? (Anyone here that old to remember?)
Not old enough to have witnessed it but following TMC long enough to remember that Studebaker has been mentioned as a company that survived the transition from horse carriage to car and truck.

Tesla really needs to shut down the car if no one is in the seat until true FSD is ready.
There are already mechanisms to protect against this. Seat belt must be engaged, seat must sense weight, etc. These can be defeated.

There are more reliable ways such as using a camera, but I will put exactly 0% of the blame on Tesla for this one. Tesla doesn’t need to do anything. People need to not be stupid.

Yes.
But there are some minor adjustments: as @JRP3 said you could shut down the car with no driver.
The Tesla already does register when you put packages in the passenger seat, noting that there is weight there but the seatbelt is not on.
It is obviously hard to know the details of this accident. I think there must be more to it than what is reported.
Whatever it is, Teslas are smart, but not fool proof

Been reading the comments on that story. Very few see what's happening, already dug in with an agenda. Even water waste was brought up. Then someone mentioned the media added the part about the cul de sac and high speed after publishing it... Figures.

I dont think this will affect stock prices Monday any more than all the other FUD. Which it was.

So true. Gets under my skin a bit, such waste.

Besides opening up to allow Tesla Sales in each state, what should Dealerships be doing to survive? Put Teslas on the lot? ICE + EVs?
Some people can't wait 2-3 week for delivery so a walk in drive away offering could bring value. Something tells me the other manufacturers would lose sales fast and add pressure on the Dealership. If their world swallowed the medicine, is there any scenario with a flat or positive outcome?
I would be trying to work a deal with Tesla to stay relevant. However, maybe game theory would show things just accelerate towards failure by joining in.

There’s no liability for Tesla here. That much is obvious.

The question I frequently ask myself - especially with regard to the FSD rollout - is Tesla doing everything they can to protect themselves beyond just liability, and without losing the agility that comes from not having to run every single engineering and software decision by an army of lawyers? The conclusion I come to is it’s a damn hard line to walk, especially as Tesla grows larger, so I can’t really complain. Just continue hoping for the best possible balance.

It’s not just liability that matters as we race towards a number of possible futures. It’s public opinion, which is greatly swayed by the media bias and FUD. The stupidity of the general public can unfortunately never be underestimated.

I thought that if there is no pressure on the drivers seat, the car would stop or shut off?
It doesn't take much weight to activate the sensor. A heavy bag of groceries will do it. If you also buckle the seatbelt, you can defeat the safety measures. There is no safety measure so foolproof that the Universe can't create a fool capable of defeating it.

Ugly incident with Autopilot (apparently): two dead after a collision on a tree. Allegedly, no one was in the driver seat.
Amazing to read some of the comments from that article....
  • if im still breathing in 20 years i plan to be driving a vintage 2020 pickup
  • One can only imagine the carnage when and if the majority of the Woke Progressive vehicles with self driving self breaking are let loose on the streets of Houston.
  • Progressives know self driving vehicles are not going to work, because we listen to the experts, not ad-men.
  • It seems more likely that once on fire the men tried to escape and checked all the doors but since none would open moved s far from the fire as they could in hopes of rescue.

Of course Tesla knows of the dangers of their cars but doesn't care as long as they make money, it doesn't matter if you die at the hands of their faulty software. They need to be banned from testing with customers on public roads.
  • Wow! One man was 59 years old and the other one was 60 years old. I would have expected them to be in their 20s or 30s!!
  • I test drove one of these cars and didn't like it at all.It brakes too late with the self braking system and I was afraid of hitting others.I tested it after driving a Subaru Outback which hit another car because it's self braking system did not stop the car fast enough
I don’t think all Tesla owners are “woke progressives”?
