So the commercial charge operator buys 6 to 12 wall chargers @ $400 ea. Organises everything and provides the energy. Presumably buys kWh for less than sale price to car owner, especially if they install PV from somebody (Tesla maybe).

The missing detail, important to shareholders, is do Tesla pass on every cent to the site operator, or do they take a reasonable 10% cut?

This will be great for workplace charging. More cars charging while the sun is up. Opens EVs to employees living with no assigned parking.

Also great for road trippers, able to have certainty of $/kWh rate and compatibility prior to booking accomm. Well done Tesla.

The $400 ea is for the connector itself. You are going to need a 200 amp service for 6 of these and that's assuming you set the amperage low or use load sharing. For 12, you'd want at least 300 amps.

Electrician, permits, etc.

Yes. The ideal case for a captive customer.

There are some routes along the local highways where a few of these would attract a decent flow of traffic until the holes get filled. The Oregon Coast has some great big holes of no chargers or unreliable ones which would get a decent amount of traffic.

Should this resurrect the FUD, remember that Unsworth was described by the media, over and over again, as a rescue diver. The movie (like the documentary) will make it clear that Unsworth was a cave explorer, not a diver.

Proof that the media don’t let facts get in the way of an anti-Musk story.

If I could start a company and write an app, I would probably be starting "AirCnC" right about now...
 
On YouTube Munro Live : Ford Interview | CEO Jim Farley, Chief Engineer Linda Zhang, and Chief EV Officer Doug Field

Ford CEO factually acknowledges Tesla's leadership, and praise Munro for helping the industry early on understand what is really happening in the automobile industry. He and the Ford execs answer Munro's pointed questions honestly. Respect.

Below is a reaction video to the Munro/Farley video. It has good commentary of key clips on how Ford recognizes just how far ahead is Tesla and lists some top challenges Ford has to move over to making EVs at scale (and by analogy other legacy OEMs).

Seems like Jaguar I-Pace also having cars spontaneously ignite due to LG pouch cells.


I also question the sanity of this customer.





Getting into a car that is catching on fire to move it down the driveway is quite bold!

I love that he called Jaguar before calling 911 🤔
If have done the same, no way I'm just going to leave it there to watch it burn my house and possessions to the ground. From a risk perspective, early on in an EV fire there's far less risk of spontaneous danger to you whilst moving the car for a minute or so. Now if it was a burning ICE, no way...
 
Few questions for this week:

Pelosi visiting Taiwan - how will that affect macros and tsla? Will China really retaliate?

Monkeypox - any inf ds specialists or public health folks on here know how serious this is? How will it affect markets/tsla?

(I know both don’t affect the company itself and it’s noise…. But still curious )

Well, no idea about the future, but if you are the type to trade thus news, you probably shorted tsmc and try to cover the short as fast as possible the moment market opens this morning

Maybe somone can think up some more trades. But like China banned 1000 food taiwanese products from China. So shorting Taiwanese food product company would've been a good idea. But I did not forsee that.

I can't get aroind thr fact that thry are slapping Taiwan for something usa is doing.

Fremont exports more vehicles in Q3 vs Q2 . . .a trend continuing from Q4 2021
Tesla ships out of Pier 80 in San Francisco to South Korea and Taiwan.

Q3 2022 - 3 ships with total of 7.0 days loading time
Q2 2022 - 3 ships with total of 6.4 days loading time
Q1 2022 - 2 ships with total of 4.4 days loading time
Q4 2021 - 2 ships with total of 2.7 days loading time

Edit for correction: I originally had Q2 vs Q1 - I meant Q3 vs Q2.

Elon is correct about the probability of thermal runaway in large pouch cells. I assume he gets that probability based on real world performance of LG Energy cells.

But I'm not sure if we know if this is an inherent flaw in large pouch cells or if it is just due to sloppy manufacturing by LG Energy. LG Energy claims it's the latter.

LG Energy is effectively saying, "We made mistakes in the past but we won't let it happen again. Large pouch cells are safe if manufacturing is done right. Trust us."

As a Chevy Bolt owner who got his pack replaced, I can report that I'm not worried about my new pack. The odds of failure for any one pack are very low. But I'm not going to trust LG Energy ever again.

As for the seriousness ilof moneypox, seems to be a painful rash with zero fatalities and requires skin to skin contact. Highly correlated to be transmitted mainly through sex, specifically men on men. To me this seems to be more on the level of STD than some kind of earth ending pandemic.
 
Apparently all kinds of interesting charger related stuff in this release.


Going to be all kinds of interesting if you can set up destination chargers with fees. Seems like a nice fit for AirBNBs and hotels.

EDIT: More details from Tesla here. Apparently this is a little different from Destination Chargers, but you can get them listed on their web site. You have to set up at least half a dozen chargers. (screen cap attached)
That's awesome. I might take advantage of that by adding a destination charger at my daughter's condo.

But they need to make sure you can pay per minute instead of per kWh. Some states don't allow you to resell electricity by kWh.
