That's a totally normal trade-in scenario. Most cars being traded-in have an outstanding loan balance.
One of the advantages of a trade-in is you are making that someone else's problem.

Tesla only offered me $41,400 for my June of 2019 LR AWD Model 3 9000 miles. I’m curious what Carmax is offering. I don’t live close to one.

Caravan was like 34k but Vroom offered 46k. I’ll try to get to a carmax soon to see what they say. In Indiana you get a Tax break for trading in so if Carmax offerers 46k I’ll save $3220 in taxes.

Tesla offered 38.4K for my 2018 Model 3 with 20K miles.

Tesla trade in offer for my P3D-, FSD, 3,000 miles was $55,600. Pretty sure Carmax won't offer anywhere near that. I was really surprised how high it was. With tax savings on trade in they pretty much offered what I paid for it.

I've seen folks postulating that Model 3 trade-in values will decrease quickly as more and more Model 3s become available due to folks trading in for Model Ys. We have two Model 3s. Trading one in for a Model Y would be optimal if the numbers work.

This is exactly what happened when the Model X launched. Model S resale tanked as many switched to the new model.

Tesla offered 44.2 for a LR AWD with FSD. I would say the drop already started.
