Unable to add new vehicle to my Tesla account

Hey all, I just bought my first Tesla yesterday (2020 model 3 performance) and I created an account on the Tesla app and attempted to add my car to my account.
After renaming the vehicle to match the app and hitting next I receive an error saying I need to make sure my car is connected to LTE or WiFi.
I’ve tried every combination I can think of: home WiFi, my phones hotspot, LTE, phone on WiFi, phone off WiFi, logging in and out of the app, reinstalling the app, rebooting the car, etc.
Anyone have any inside how to fix this?? If not I’ll be calling Tesla’s support tomorrow.

Note: my phone is connected to the car via Bluetooth and both the app and car are up to date with the latest updates and software.

Thanks!

Solution
Since you just got the car that doesn’t sounds new, did you submit the paperwork to prove your ownership?

Maybe Tesla's server needs to have your ownership record so you can alter your car's name.
That could be. I wasn’t able to get far enough into the process to even submit the paperwork yet.

The LTE that it wants is not your phone.

The car needs to connect to:

LTE signal that's paid by Tesla. It's automatic if there's no Wifi.

Or

Wifi from your home.

The purpose is to connect your car with the mothership, Tesla server.

Thats what I thought. I tried with WiFi off and It shows that the car is connected to LTE but still no luck.

Good to know it doesn’t like 5g WiFi. Even with LTE though there’s still no luck.

You may have to contact Tesla and provide ownership documents. This Tesla web page describes various scenarios:

Just bumping the thread because I'm having the same problem after buying a MXP from a third party. Doesn't matter if I connect to Wi-Fi or LTE- keep getting the same error as OP

I have a currently working solution (As of 04/30/2024) For this issue. After talking to Tesla tech support, this seems to work 100%.
1. Start setup in the app, enter VIN, rename car and save BUT DON'T CLICK NEXT ON THE APP!!
2. REMOVE ALL KNOWN WIFI NETWORKS. Don't just disconnect, FORGET them.
3. TURN OFF WIFI! These two steps are most important. That is the main reason it's failing. Trust breaks along the transmit somewhere, use their LTE only and it works, but first!
4. Turn "OFF" the Tesla. Press Brake pedal, click [Turn Off] and remove foot.
5. WAIT FOR 120 SECONDS
6. Press Brake pedal to restart interface.
7. Press <Next> on App.

It went on to the registration screen after that! I'm so thankful for Kevin at Tech support, heck the whole group deserves a round of beer!

Thanks for your hard work.

What I can add is that the Tesla reps do have the power and a way to manually add the car to your accoi, despite them telling you that there is another team that does this.

After the 5th or 6th call, I ran into an amazing agent named, Madison, and she saw my pain. Made me wait a little bit on the phone and bam! The car was added to my account.

I know we can rant, per usual, about the shitty Tesla support. I'm living another nightmare with them not transferring my Slacker Radio account with the car. But once in a while, you run into some good people that make the customer their priority and pull through!

Good luck guys!
